YEAR 6 NEWS
Homework
Spelling
Students have their regular
weekly spelling homework,
learning their list words and
making sure they are able to
put the words into sentences
appropriately.

Reading
An email will be sent out with a
reading text that students can
read in their spare time from
the Reading A-Z website.

Writing
Students are encouraged to
read a range of newspaper
articles at home and bring any
that interest them into class to
share and discuss with others.

Maths
For some maths activities we
will be doing, we will need an
assortment of empty square or
rectangular boxes e.g. tissue
boxes, cereal boxes, etc. It
would be much appreciated if
as a family you could collect
empty packages and send
them to school over the next
week. Thank you!

What we are doing this

week
Over the next six weeks I will be teaching a range of lessons
in Room 12 as part of my Master of Teaching postgraduate
degree at UWA. This week I will be responsible for the
literacy lessons. In spelling, we are focusing on a list of words
with the long e sound and will be finding the meaning of
these words, breaking them into graphemes and syllables and
participating in a range of activities before completing a
spelling test on Friday. In reading, we are examining the
compare and contrast reading strategy, and will be
completing a range of activities relating to this. In writing, we
are beginning our study on newspaper articles and journalism
and will be reading a range of newspaper articles. Students will
annotate these articles and write responses to them, focusing
on the main ideas, purpose, audience, features and structure
of newspaper articles.

Next weeks focus

In spelling, we are focusing on a list of words with the m
sound. In reading, we will be focusing on the making
predictions reading strategy. In writing, we will be looking at
facts and opinions and the difference between them, and
students will be writing their own newspaper article as part of
a class newspaper project. In numeracy, we will be revising
perimeter and area of 2D shapes and will look at surface area
of a range of 3D shapes.
