Burkett, Nicola. 05 - A Hero. PoemHunter.com, 2 November 2006.

05 - A Hero by Nicola Burkett describes fallen soldiers, however, the writing could be
applied to literary protagonists as well. The poem portrays heroes as "angels in disguise." The
poem encompasses all different people as a potential hero. Burkett identifies heroism present in
our normal society and equality among all humans regardless of gender or race. She focuses on
the ways a hero can be made and what heroes are willing to do. Burkett believes heroes can be
created anywhere, from one single act of kindness or years of care. Heroes are selfless and
willing to give up life for the greater good. Nicola Burkett also writes about the fate of heroes,
whether they are remember or forgotten-the latter is the most likely. Finally, 05 - A Hero also
describes three attributes of a hero: loving, brave, and courageous. In conclusion, this poem
beautifully captures many different aspects of true heroism by describing the soldiers that protect
us every day.
