TEXT 1

It is easy to make a delicious-looking hamburger at home. But would this hamburger still look
delicious after it sat on your kitchen table under very bright lights for six or seven hours? If someone
took a picture or made a video of this hamburger after the seventh hour, would anyone want to eat
it? More importantly, do you think you could get millions of people to pay money for this hamburger?
These are the questions that fast food companies worry about when they produce commercials or
print ads for their products. Video and photo shoots often last many hours. The lights that the
photographers use can be extremely hot. These conditions can cause the food to look less
attractive to potential consumers. Because of this, the menu items that you see in fast food
commercials are probably not healthy.
Lets use the hamburger as an example. The first step towards building the perfect commercial
hamburger is the bread. The food stylista person employed by the company to make sure the
products look perfectspends hours looking for the perfect one.. Next, the stylist carefully moves
the sesame seeds on the bread using glue and tweezers for maximum visual attraction. The bread
is then sprayed with a waterproofing solution so that it will not get wet from contact with other
ingredients, the lights, or the humidity in the room.
Next, the food stylist shapes a hamburger into a perfect circle. Only the outside of the meat gets
cookedthe inside is left raw so that the meat looks juicy and more delicious. The food stylist then
paints the outside of the hamburger with a mixture of oil and brown food coloring. Grill marks are
painted into the hamburgers using hot metal skewers.
Finally, the food stylist searches through dozens of tomatoes and heads of lettuce to find the bestlooking produce. One leaf of the crispest lettuce and one center slice of the reddest tomato are
selected and then sprayed with glycerin to keep them looking fresh.
So the next time you see a tasty hamburger in a fast food commercial, remember: youre actually
looking at glue, paint, raw meat, and glycerin! Are you still hungry?

Philadelphia is a city known for many things. It is where the Declaration of Independence was
signed in 1776, and it was also the first capital of the United States. But one fact about Philadelphia
is not so well-known: it is home to nearly 3,000 murals painted on the sides of homes and buildings
around the city. In fact, it is said that Philadelphia has more murals than any other city in the world,
with the exception of Rome. How did this come to be?
More than 20 years ago, a New Jersey artist named Jane Golden started a program pairing
troubled youth with artists to paint murals on a few buildings around the city. From this small project,
something magical happened. The young people involved helped to create magnificent pieces of
art, but there were other, perhaps more important benefits. The young people learned to collaborate
and be kind to another people during the various steps required to paint and design a mural. They
learned to be responsible, because they needed to follow a schedule to make sure the murals were
completed. They also learned to help in their community. It is hard for any resident to see the
spectacular designs and not feel proud to be a part of Philadelphia.
Take a walk around some of the poorest neighborhoods in Philadelphia, neighborhoods full of
broken windows and litter everywhere, and you will find beautiful works of art on the sides and
fronts of buildings. Of course the murals are not just in poor neighborhoods, they are also in
neighborhoods where rich people live. Special buses take tourists to different parts of the city to see
the various murals, which are huge portraits of historical heroes, to cityscapes, to scenes
representing the diverse ethnic groups that call Philadelphia home.
As a result of its success, the mural program created by Jane Golden has now become the nations
largest public art program and a model for other cities throughout the country trying to help troubled

Throughout the world, ancient forests are in danger. Many of the plants and animals that live in
these forests face extinction, and many of the people and cultures who depend on these forests for
their way of life also under threat. But the news is not all bad. There is still a chance to save these
forests and the biodiversity they support. Greenpeaces latest campaign will ensure this chance is
not wasted. The worlds ancient forests, coniferous forests, and rain forests. Together they maintain
environmental systems that are essential for life on Earth. They do this by controlling rainfall and
evaporation of water from soil; storing large amounts of carbon that would otherwise contribute to
climate change.
These forests are the habitats of around two-thirds of the worlds land-based species od plants and
animals. Thats hundreds of thousands of different plants and animals, and literally millions of
insects, all of which are vital components of the worlds delicately balanced ecosystem. And of
course, the forests are home to millions of forest people who depend on them for their survival-both
physically and spiritually. More than 87 human cultures have been wiped out in Brazil alone as a
result of deforestation, and continued destruction of the worlds forests is endangering many more
in the first years of the new century.
There is one last chance to save these forests and the people and species that depend on them.

When I left I had no idea what I wanted to do, but I knew the jobs I didnt want. You know: I never

Then I got a job as a secretary with an advertising agency. I can t remember exactly how I got the
job. I could type, but I think I knew someone who worked there and she introduced me to her boss
something like that. Anyway, one of the clients of the advertising agency was this film company,
called Talking Pictures, and I started working for them. I stayed there for quite a long time about 5
years as the Personal Assistant to the Managing Director. I learned a lot about the film industry. I
started to write about films for a magazine and now I work for the magazine full-time as a journalist.

had a real job interview? No, I haven`t. In all that time I havent had an interview! Ive never sat
down and decided I wanted to do a particular job. Lifes no like that any more.

In recent years people have threatened the future of many animals. Life has become difficult or
impossible for many species. Wild animals cannot compete with people for land the animals
always lose.
What have we done?
- We have cut down forests and made farms: fewer trees mean fewer animals.
- We have hunted animals for their skins or horns.
- We have built roads and towns in place where wild animals live.
- We have polluted the environment.
Maybe it isnt too late. But we have to do something now. Tomorrow will be too late.
Today we look at some animals in danger, and consider what we can do to save them.
The white rhino
Since 1975. The number of rhinos in the world has gone down by 85 per cent. The largest kind of
rhino is the white rhinoceros, which lives in Africa.
Rhinos eat grass and they have wide, square mouths, like cows. They live together in groups of five
to ten, called herds. After the baby rhino, called a calf, is born it stays with its mother for
approximately four years.
Rhinos are big! Theyre 160 185 cm tall and 370 - 405 cm long. And theyre heavy they weigh
up to 2722 kilos.
An unusual thing about the rhino is that it can turn its ears to hear sounds from any direction!
The rhinos horn is made of something called keratin, which people have in their hair and
fingernails! Poachers kill the rhinos for their horn. A rhino horn can sell for as much as 40,000
dollars . Poachers have hunted and killed thousands of white rhinos, but 5,000 still live in wildlife
reserves in South Africa and Zimbabwe. Some African countries use men with guns to protect the
