Finding the Equation of a Function from
a Graph
Notes
Equation from the Graph of a Function
You can find the equation of a function, given a
graph, by calculating the slope, and finding the yintercept.
Slope: Rise
Run
Rise: The amount the y value increases or decreases
Run: The amount the x value moves to the right
Y intercept: the point at which the line crosses and
intersects the y-axis.
Finding the Equation from a Graph
1. Pick two exact points (lattice points) from the line
2. Starting with the left most point, count the rise (change
in y) * if it drops, its slope is negative*
3. Count the run (change in x)
4. Slope m = rise/run or (change in y)/(change in x)
5. Find the point on the line that intersects with the y-axis.
That is your y-intercept (b value)
*If it does not intersect at an exact point, substitute any
point on the line into the equation and solve for b*
1. Write the equation in slope-intercept form
