Name of Examination: Albumin

Definition:
It is the largest component of the plasma proteins and is responsible for most of the
colloidal osmotic pressure within the blood. Albumin also serves as a reserve
nitrogen source for tissue growth and healing, and it is a transport vehicle for many
substances.
Preparation:
1. There is no food or fluid restriction.
2. Collect 3 to 5 ml of venous blood in a red-top tube.

Decreased.
The liver plays an important role in
protein metabolism. It synthesizes
almost all of the plasma proteins
including albumin and most of the
plasma lipoproteins. A decreased
result of albumin may be possibly
due to hepatic dysfunction brought
about by destruction of
hepatocytes or liver cells.
