dictionary with guidance (at least 6 out of 10 highlighted words)
Activities:
Set-induction
1. The teacher uses a stick puppet and asks pupils to predict the
characteristics of the ant.
Pre-reading:
1. The teacher shows the pupils a picture of an ant through English
Education Courseware Primary School Year 5 and elicits responses in
regards to the picture shown.
While-reading:
1. The teacher gives instructions to the pupils to jot down the highlighted
words from the English Education Courseware Primary School Year 5
on a piece of paper.
2. The teacher plays the story line by line and the pupils listen.
3. The teacher pauses it and the pupils read aloud the lines.
4. The teacher plays the story again and pauses when pupils manage to
identify the highlighted words.
Post-reading: (group work)
1. The teacher displays the whole text with the highlighted words.
2. The pupils use a dictionary to locate the appropriate meaning
according to the context of the story read.
3. The pupils write down the meaning of the words in a tree map with at
least two meanings if they have found more than one for certain
words.
4. The pupils identify and circle the correct meaning.
Closure:
1. The teacher randomly chooses a few pupils to give the meaning for
randomly chosen words.
