Collagen 3D Model

About Collagen
The most abundant protein in the body
Found in muscles, bones, skin, tendons, most prominent
part of cartilage
The main structural protein found in animal connective
tissue
Jello is made out of boiled down Collagen!

Transcription
The process by which DNA is copied (transcribed) to mRNA, which
carries the information needed for protein synthesis
Occurs in the nucleus of an animal cell
RNA polymerase unzips the DNA
pre-RNA enters nucleus and attaches to one half of the unzipped DNA
The pre-RNA copies the DNA coding
It then becomes mRNA and with the copied DNA coding, travels into
the cytoplasm
The two unzipped halfs of the DNA zips back up

Translation
mRNA travels into a ribosome on the rough endoplasmic reticulum
Every group of three nucleotides on the mRNA is called a codon
mRNA is read each codon at a time by the ribosome and a
corresponding transfer RNA is attached to the mRNA
Each tRNA comes with a connected anticodon (group of three
nucleotides) and an amino acid
The next codon is read and the amino acid from the first tRNA forms a
peptide bond with the next amino acid on the next tRNA
The connected amino acids form a polypeptide chain

Translation Cont.

Folding
There is a polypeptide chain formed after translation
The amino acids in each polypeptide bond fold into more complex
3D shapes
May form spirals/helixes or crimped sheets
They then fold onto each other again
Amino acids determine what other chains the chain will interact with
and how it will fold
Primary-the chain of amino acids
Secondary-the helixes or sheets
Tertiary-folded and linked with other chains
Quaternary-complete finished folded protein
