STUDY GUIDE SECTION 3

Independent variable: A variable that is used to find out the

dependent variable.
Dependent variable: Measured in a experiment, evaluated in a

equation.
Vertical line test: A way to determine if the function graphed is

actually a function.
Domain: The (input) values or (x) values of a function.
Range: The (output) values or (y) values of a function.
Absolute Value Function: A function with absolute value

symbols within it.

Quadratic Function: A Parabola with a U shape, a, b, and c are

numbers that don't equal to zero.

Function: The x values and y values together have one single output.
Close Property: When an operation is performed with two numbers

in the set is itself a part of the set.

Relation: When a vertical line crosses a function's line only once.
Increasing Intervals: When the graphed line is going up.
Decreasing Intervals: When the graphed line is going down.
Relative Maximum: A point where it changes from increasing to

decreasing on a graph.
Relative Minimum: A point where it changes from decreasing to

increasing on a graph

Square Root Function: Half of a parabola with a vertical directrix.

Exponential Function: y=ab^x, a and b are greater than 0, be I s

not equal to 1.
Piecewise Function: A sequence on variables defined by a function.
Parent Function: The first function and the simplest.
Transformation: Ways to manipulate a variable that change the

shape, line, or point on a graph.
