Dear Dr. Riesselman

I am writing to apply for the Phd position in Department of Geology at the University of Otago,
as advertised in University website, 2014. I am currently pursuing a M.Sc. (Geology) in
Department of Geology and Geophysics, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, INDIA. I
would be graduating by May, 2015. I went through your profile and found that my area of
interest matches with yours, therefore I would like to pursue my PhD under your able guidance.
My research interests include the implementation of stable isotope geochemistry to unveil the
palaeoceanography, palaeoclimatology and other various aspects. Currently I am involved in
a research oriented M.Sc. dissertation which itself is stable isotope based. I have just started
my project and the objective of the project is to find if there any relationship between
degradation of organic matter and chemical alteration index. For this purpose I have to
calculate the 18O of the laterite section from top to bottom giving interval distances. I found
that your lab is actively involved in research on palaeoceanography, palaeoclimatology and
other stable isotope based research work, therefore I have immense interest in joining your lab
for doing my PhD work.
I would greatly appreciate, if you can give me an opportunity to work at your institute and I
believe that my determination and enthusiasm could help me success in the research with your
group.
I have attached my curriculum vitae for your kind perusal. After obtaining my bachelors
degree, from Banaras Hindu University with Geology as my hons. subject, I joined Indian
Institute of Technology, Kharagpur for the masters and my CGPA after 2 semesters, is 8.34/10.
I plan to start the project after completing my masters in May, 2015.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Deepak kumar vishwakarma
