9 RUBE GOLDBERG DESIGN COMPETITION

DESCRIPTION:
This contest consists of designing a Rube Goldberg Machine to Peel a banana. The
starting point is to topple a domino block. The objective is to get the job done in the most convoluted,
creative, artistic, complicated, unconventional way possible.

I. RULES AND GUIDELINES:

A. General
1. The competition is open to all PICE Student Chapter Members in good standing.
2. A team shall consist of not more than 10 members per student chapter. PICE membership ID and school
ID of team members must be presented before the competition commences.
3. Team members must be registered participants in the 19th National Civil Engineering
Students Conference.
4. Registration fee of Php 1,000.00 shall be charged per team.
5. The deadline of submission of entries (with complete information such as names of the members of the
group, title of the entry and description how the machine will work) to Student Chapter Affairs
Committee or National Secretariat c/o Wilma Ojastro, is on November 4, 2016
6. All entries shall be exhibited during the entire duration of the competition at the designated venue.
B. Technical Rules and Specifications
1. A 3 ft x 3 ft or equivalent area of 9 square feet platform should be constructed for the machine with a
simple secure way to fasten it together. Steps that bridge machines sections should be easy to connect.
The rest of the machine is up to the participants.
2. The machine is to peel a banana. The starting point is to topple a domino block.
3. Every team must have a leader. The best of the three trials with a reset for each run will be considered.
ONLY two team members may touch the machine while it is being reset. No repairs will be allowed
during the run.
4. There will be no cost limit and no limit on the materials to be used. Your imagination is your only limit.
But of course, the machine should not be expensive, of recoverable and recycled materials such as old
toys. Scrapped materials or old pieces of appliances are highly recommended.
5. A detailed description of the entry is needed.
6. Judging is on November 18, 2016 from 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM, including set-up of the machine, at the SMX
Convention Center, SMX Lanang Premier, J.P. Laurel Avenue, Davao City or other venue for the competition
that may be designated.
