Aim of the project


It aims to recognize talents in the field of cartooning and reward them,
showcase and preserve their art for future generations, guide young and
budding cartoonists and animators and above all, popularize the art among
the masses.

The proposed comic and animation center aims to promote the cartoon art
and strengthen the relationship between the cartoon arts and the public and
explore its significance to community.

Objectives of the project


The objective of the Centre is to promote the cartoon, comic animation and
caricature as being a present day form of art.

It wants to offer a platform for Indian and foreign cartoonists and animators.

The Centre wants to draw the cartoon, comic and animation nearer to the
public and make people aware of the importance of the cartoon or caricature
and animation in our society.

Finally, it wants to be THE comic and animation information centre,


stimulating the research on the themes humour and cartoons.

The Center will be the place for the recording and the conservation of our
cartoon heritage.

Background of the project
A proposed institute, museum & production center dedicated to
Cartoon, comic and animation. An institution for cartoon studies in India,
Creating cartoonists & animators, with basic courses, studio work including
workshops. A museum that shows the origin, history & evolution of cartoon.
Preserving & exhibiting all sorts of cartoons, starting from pre-historic time to
editorial, social, political, economic cartoons & modern day animated toonz.

Scope of the project


1. It is the first of its kind in India, established with the aim of promoting the
art of cartooning in the country.

2. To re-orientate the image of cartoon arts and extend its values among the
public so as to arouse and establish peoples interest and improve their
quality of life.

3. To provide relaxing and interesting environment with enjoyable


atmosphere for people to express their ideas to others. Generating and
enhancing the interaction and communication networks between different
people, ages, places I countries.

4. To create interactive exhibition areas of cartoon arts for joy imagination


and liberty through the generation of different visual effects from the
manipulation of different architectural languages and symbolisms - lights,
colors, textures, spaces and forms, and the assistance of various
technologies.

5. To provide a nurturing ground for emergence of new talents in design and


production of cartoon arts and development with different technologies so as
to enhance its uses in various media.

Volume of room:

This is obtained on the basis of acoustic


requirements (reverberation) as follows:
playhouses 4-5m/spectator; opera 6-8m/spectator
of air volume. For technical ventilation reasons,
the volumes should be no less than these figures
so as to avoid air changes which are too
pronounced (draughts).

Types of exhibits
Static exhibits: These are historic exhibits,
reproduction of original objects.

Active exhibits: They are the exhibits which are


static till a visitor activates them into producing
sound and motion. Working models are the best
examples.

Interactive exhibits: They are the most advanced
and allow the visitor to activate and give them a
multiple choice of options and then give
various results. The visitor can accommodate with
exhibit These exhibits allow the
visitors to experiment.

The doors should be placed in such a way that


visitor coming through will see the full length of
opposite wall. It is therefore not advisable for it to
face window, since the visitor will then be dazzled
just as he comes in.

Seoul animation
center
The Seoul Animation Center was
established to support and
develop the domestic animation
industry. Our goal is to strengthen the national competitiveness and efficient
development of the animation industry, as well as to fortify the infrastructure
of animation-related industries as a means of creating an information Mecca
for industrial development.

Seoul ani-cinema
Seoul Ani-Cinema is fully utilized as the integrated culture space where
various types of cultural events are accommodated. Seoul Ani-Cinema is
equipped with a total of 179 seats, the cutting-edge projection facilities
which can play both digital and analog video contents, 5.1 channel Dolby
Digital Surround systems, and the widescreen.

Exhibition hall
The Exhibition Halls at Seoul Animation Center are spaces for cultural
contents where the special exhibitions on multiple themes related with
cartoons, animations and games and those on lease are held all year long.
The Theme & Special Exhibition Halls are comprised of individual spaces and
a lobby gallery.

Library
The Libraries possess the local and overseas publications on cultural
contents including cartoons, animations and characters along with the video
archives, offering useful information to students, general public and those
engaged in the industry

House of cartoon
Besides the libraries, the House of Cartoons displays various exhibits and
three dimensional artworks which help improve the appreciation on comics.

Creation supporting room


The Creation Supporting Room is a workshop of creativity which encourages
the smooth flow of the projects undertaken by respective publishers and
producers through numerous support programs regarding the housing and
the related use of the promising companies in the culture content industry,

resulting in a successful outcome. It offers efficient work environment for the
companies in the creativity field.

Studio for foreign cartoonist


The Studio for Foreign Cartoonists offer a workshop temporarily for
overseas cartoonists and illustrators visiting Korea for our comics and culture
exploration so as to promote the Korean culture and comics while facilitating
the network with the Korean counterparts.

Offering a workshop for overseas cartoonists and illustrators and


information on the exploration of Korean culture.

Undertaking the exchange events with the Korean cartoonists and


illustrators.

Character experience rooms


The Character Experience Pavilion is a space of exhibitions and educations
which help understand the process of making animation films through
animation experience tools with the use of clay animations, stop motion
animations, and characters. It is comprised of the Character Experience
Room I & II.

Content lab 1

The Content Lab 1 is a space of education for the professional drawing


training, cartoon/animation experience class, cartoon & animation class for
children and adolescents (Kidstoon, Aniteen School), knowledge education
for adults and long- and short-term workshop special classes.

Equipped facilities: 40 desks and chairs, beam projector / screen,VX2000


6mm video camera (2 units), slides (1 unit), movable light box etc.

Content lab 2

The Content Lab 2 is a space of education for the professional education


courses including animation designer, scenario writer etc., cartoon/animation
experience class, and cartoon & animation class for children and adolescents
(Kidstoon, Aniteen School).

Equipped facilities: 30 desks and chairs, beam projector / screen,


computer (1 unit)

Content lab

The Content Lab 3 is a space of education for the professional animation


education, cartoon/animation experience class, and cartoon & animation
class for children and adolescents (Kidstoon, Aniteen School).

Digital lab

The Digital Lab is a space of education for the professional education


courses on digital images.

Support for development and production


The Service for Development and Production is subsidized by the city of
Seoul so as to support the culture content industry strategically to grow as
the successful future industry with global competitiveness.

This project subsidizes and supports the [production costs technology


marketing distribution (playing, exhibitions, commercialization etc.)] which
is needed to produce the content which can catch on with people round the
world.

Character prototype production room


The character prototype production room is a specialized space equipped
with the latest digital dimensional formative system to support the
development of various character products of Koreas cultural contents such
as cartoons, animations, games and characters and to produce the
prototypes.

Post production studios

Post production studio is equipped with the cutting-edge digital facilities and
equipments for the post production works of video and image works. it is
comprised of the video editing room and the audio editing room it offers a
chance to tap into the facilities and equipment needed for producing a video
material jointly.

The video editing room


Further, the video editing room is equipped with 4 units of Non-Linear Real
time System including 2 units of HD-SR CAM, Avid DS Nitirs, and Symphony
Nitris for the first time in Korea for HD editing works.

Likewise, it has 1 unit of Non-Linear System for digital and analog Beta
editing and 2 units of Non-Linear System for SD editing. It boasts of high
equipment quality and outstanding compatibility and efficiency of the
equipment.

The Sound Editing Room

The Sound Editing Room is a digital animation studio centered on Protools

Concept and form


By using one of the cartoon's prime characteristics, the speech balloon, the
Cartoon Museum will instantly be recognized as place for cartoons, comics
and animations. It seems obvious but creates a structure both surprising and
humorous, maybe even comedic. It is formed of eight giant balloon-shaped
forms. Each balloon will contain a different function within the museum,
including two exhibition spaces that will display cartoons, comics and
animations. The permanent exhibition space will spiral out of its chamber
and on through the building to connect with three auditoriums and a comic
book library.

The structural concept enhances the sustainable profile of the building: the
aerodynamic design results in even wind pressure and lower need for air-
conditioning. The box in box construction of the bubbles permits different
conditions inside the building and improves the energy efficiency. The CCAM
will consolidate the city's leading position as China's capital of the animation
industry.

Functions and circulation


Services such as the lobby, education, three theaters/cinemas, with in total
1111 seats, and a comic book library occupy each their own balloon. If two
balloons touch in the interior a large opening allows access and views in-
between the volumes. The comic strip Library offers views to the outside and
into adjacent balloons.

The program is distributed over eight volumes which are interconnected
allowing for a circular tour of the entire space. The routing permits short or
long visits, visits to the cinema, the temporary exhibition or the roof terrace
restaurant.

The balloon shape allows for versatile exhibitions. The permanent collection
is presented in a chronological spiral whereas the temporary exhibition hall
offers total flexibility. A giant robot is in the center of the permanent
exhibition spiral. One of the balloons is devoted to interactive experience in
which visitors can actively experiment with all sorts of animation techniques
like blue screen, stop motion, drawing, creating emotions etc. The core
attraction of this space is a gigantic 3D zoetrope.

Concept and form
Erick Kristantos proposal for a comic and cartoon art museum in New York
manages to do something architecture rarely does: Make you laugh.

The project was influenced by the form and properties of speech bubbles,
creating spaces that are unconventional in both shape and organization.

The general volume of the building was first subdivided into storey and
programs after negotiating the appropriate area for each function
represented by bubble quotes, the individual rooms were adjusted in to
modules and arranged to seemingly hover in space on top of the other.
Circulation is mainly driven by a central helix ramp while shortcuts are
provided by short, by-passing slides in between levels views toward the
street and Brooklyn Bridge are established while open roof surfaces are
converted into multi-functional areas.

Space design
Bubble Art Display is a way of presenting comic and cartoon art into an
architectural building as a public display that attracts people with the
intention of promote the art itself. The concept originates from a series of
bubble quotes used in comics, which, in this design, is used to display the

programs of the Museum. The dynamic and playful interior space, created by
the bubble quotes shapes, generates an engaging, fun visitors experience,
which allows them to observe different activities happening at the same
time. Moreover, these bubble quotes are connected by a vertical helix ramp
at the center of the building. And to make the experience even more
amusing, slides are provided as a shortcut from one space to another. With
the unique figure that carries a mission to display as well as promote comic
and cartoon art, this museum will be the new icon for lower east side area of
Manhattan.

Functions and circulation

The bubbles come in various shapes and sizes and they pile up, one on top
of the other on Manhattan's Lower East Side, like a monument to the Sunday
funnies. Indoors, they serve as modules for various exhibitions, retail and
other spaces. A main corkscrew stair connects all the floors, or if you want to
take a shortcut, you can slip down a slide thatll launch you from one super
happy fun zone to the next -- from, say, a giant Spiderman balloon to a
clutch of Storm troopers. Every 8-year-old boy hopped up on his Chocolate
Frosted Sugar Bombs has dreamed of a place like this.
