Captain Jose Luis C. Dizon was reared in the seaport town near the Mayon Volcano
in Albay, Philippines. He graduated from the Philippine Merchant Marine School in
1952. He later served onboard foreign- owned ships as deck officer then as Master
on general cargo, car, and large bulk carriers on worldwide trade. He is now
connected with John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation (Iloilo Maritime Academy) as
faculty member. The main focus of the book is the proper steps of handling and
maneuvering ships.

The book is in maritime genre. The purpose of the book is to instruct the readers on
how to handle and maneuver the ship. The book is used for functional reading
because the book is an aid for the readers especially students in maritime schools
to learn how to handle and maneuver the ship properly. The author provides
illustrations and diagrams for the readers to better understand the lessons, the
content is well organized and the lessons were divided into chapters. The author
also provide objectives in the beginning of every chapter for the readers to be
aware of what will they learn after they have read the chapter. Summaries were
given in the last part of every chapter. Chapter test were also included in the book
to assess the readers of what they have learned.

The book has achieved its purpose which is to provide knowledge to the readers
about shiphandling and maneuvering the ship properly. I highly recommend this
book to be used by students in maritime school as a learning material because the
book provides relevant information and is presented in logic way and is essential in
imparting knowledge to the readers. The content and the knowledge gained in the
book can be used in real- life situations especially onboard a vessel. Thumbs up for
this very effective learning material.
