A young man, noble and deli-
cate came up to Francis and
said,"I want to join you!" Fran-
cis replied, " Little son, you are

you could endure the hardship of our
poverty!" The young man answered,
"What you can endure, then, so could I

A Shepherd's View
Temptations often come into
our daily lives. There are
many evils that lurk to
attempt to make us wary of
God's Love and Promise. But
each of us, like Jesus, have a
power within. We have been
blessed with the power of
Baptism! That's right, the
wonderful and awesome power of the Trinity--
Father, Son and Spirit, who lives in us and makes
us move and is in our being. Nothing, no evil
force can overcome the greatness of God! Lent is
a time for us to dwell on this gift. We should
meditate, pray, do works of charity, as well as the
fasting and abstaining that we do throughout
this season to help us maintain the power within!
(As I write these words I feel like a writer for
Marvel Comics) But, it's TRUE! we can battle our
temptations with the greatness of the superhero
within each one of us. We just have got to come
to this realization. I pray that those with
addictions can only see and believe this!
Lent is so important to our spiritual journey. It
should NOT be a season marked by "giving up",
but rather, by "doing for!" It's all in the way you
look at it. Jesus did the same when he was
tempted. As the days begin to lengthen so
should the power of the Son of God within us
prove to be the muscled strength and power and
grace that we rely on each day. "Ain't no moun-
tain high enough,,,ain't no valley low enough" to
keep out the power of God's soul-enriching and
loving strength. He lives is me! He lives in
You,,,,and so our daily struggle with temptations
will become victorious with Christ Jesus!

Glory to God in the Highest
Finally, we give praise to God for the forgiveness of
sins brought about by Christ as we pray, Glory to
God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of
good will. These opening words of the Gloria recall
the hymn of praise sung by the angels over
Bethlehem on that first Christmas night. So the
Gloria is like a Christmas song we sing all
throughout the year.
And fittingly so. For every Mass, is in a sense, a
reliving of the Christmas mystery. The same Jesus
who was welcomed in Bethlehem by the angels
some 2000 years ago is about to come upon our
altar sacramentally under the appearance of bread
and wine. How wonderful it is to welcome him with
the same song of the angels:
Glory to God in the highest!

Family Faith Formation
First Sunday of Lent Matthew 4:1-11
When Jesus resists the temptations presented to him
by the devil, he draws on his religious upbringing
and tradition. Jesus is able to quote from Scripture
because he is the Son of God and because he was a
human person who lived his Jewish beliefs fully. We
who are responsible for raising children are also
called upon to immerse them fully in our Catholic
Christian tradition so that they too will be able to
draw upon this tradition to resist the temptations
they will face in their lives.
Children: What do you plan to do during Lent this
year as a way of showing you want to grow closer to
Jesus?
Parents: When you yourself pause to be alone with
God, what distracts and prevents you from dwelling
in that? Busyness? The demands of life? TV? The
internet?
Novena to St. Anthony
It is the practice to pray the Thirteen Tuesdays before
the Feast of St. Anthony (June 13th). The weekly
prayers will be published ongoing beginning Sunday,
March 12th. Please keep this bulletin for reference.
We will be praying the Novena to St. Anthony on
Monday evenings following Faith Formation
beginning 3/13 through 6/12. All are welcome.
Opening:
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the
Holy Spirit. Amen
St. Anthonys Prayer
Lord Jesus, bind us to you and to our neighbor with
love. May our hearts not be turned away from you.
May our souls not be deceived nor our talent or
minds enticed by allurements of error, so that we
may never distance ourselves from your love.
Thus may we love our neighbor as ourselves with
strength,
wisdom and gentleness. With your help, you who are
blessed throughout all ages. Amen
Pray for us, St. Anthony, that we may be made wor-
thy of the promises of Christ.
God, our loving Father, you are glorified in your
servant St. Anthony, whose glory is the crowning of
your gifts to him. In his life on earth you give us an
example. In our prayerful communion with him you
give us strength and protection. We praise and
thank you, Lord, for these benefits through
Jesus Christ, your Son, Amen.
