ELA Instructional Elements

Writing Workshop 45-60 minutes


o Mini-lesson at least 4 times a week
o Conduct small group instruction and conferences
Interactive Writing 10-15 minutes
o Daily in grades K-1
Reading Workshop 60 minutes
o Mini-lesson at least 4 times a week
o Conduct small group instruction and conferences
Read Aloud 15-30 minutes
o At least once a day
o Includes a variety of genres
o Include a variety of purposed ( interactive with accountable talk, building
background knowledge, reading like a writer, ect.)
Word Work
o At least 4 times a week
Shared Reading 10-15 minutes
o Daily in grades K-2
Non-Negotiable ELA Workshop
Expectations

Students will:

Meet in a designated gathering area for mini-lesson


Be reading at their independent reading levels during independent time
o By February:
K: 20 min (independent and partner time)
1: 35 min
2: 45 min
3-6: 35-45 min (eyes on print)
Be allowed time to book shop outside of workshop time
Have access to leveled classroom libraries (1000+ books)
Be given frequent opportunities to write about their reading
Display artifacts of instruction (sticky notes, notebooks, ect.)
Set and work towards goals

Teachers will:

Meet with 2 flexible groups and hold 2 individual conferences daily


Allow student(s ) time to share work during/after the workshop
Limit bathroom breaks during mini-lesson
Keep length of min-lesson to age of the students in minutes
Display and track reading/ writing stamina using chart(s)
Use anchor charts to display strategies
Meet with each student at least once a week
