What do they need to understand, know, and/or able to do?

Outcome(s):

N7.5 Develop and demonstrate an understanding of adding and subtracting positive

fractions and mixed numbers, with like and unlike denominators, concretely, pictorially,
and symbolically (limited to positive sums and differences). [C, CN, ME, PS, R, V]

ability to utilize meaningful, equitable and holistic approaches to assessment and
evaluation; and

Stage 2- Assessment

Assessment FOR Learning (formative) Assess the students during the learning to help
determine next steps.

Wipe Board questions: If students get the right answer they are understanding the
concept needed to add fractions

Assessment OF Learning (summative) Assess the students after learning to evaluate

what they have learned.

Assessment of learning will be later on during the assignment for adding fractions as
well as the order of operations unit for fractions
Stage 3- Procedures:

Motivational/Anticipatory Set (introducing topic while engaging the students)

Chocolate Bar Example

Main Procedures/Strategies:
1. Review Addition of Fraction to grade 8s to see if they understand the concept
2. After Review do 12 examples of adding fractions to see if students have full
understanding of concepts, feel free to add or take out examples depending on
student progress
3. Once concept is understood do a game In the case Jeopardy using addition of
fractions as the questions and answers of the game. Make sure that all students
get chance to answer as well as each team gets an equal number of questions

Closing of lesson:
To finish off the lesson I asked for a review of what the students thought of the lesson to
give personal feedback on the review lesson of Adding Fractions

Personal Reflection: Overall the lesson was very well done. The flow was nice and we took
a very nice tempo but the first class in period 2 did run out of time, luckily, I had time in
period 3 to ask for the revision sheet as I have the same kids for both periods. This period
was changed in period 5 and we ended perfectly on the bell. The Class game of adding
fractions jeopardy was a huge hit and both classes asked to do it again. It also got great
feedback in the review sheets. I would change the detail I put into explanation of fractions
and put it all into one example instead of 3 examples for each fraction that I had for each
type of fraction. I would also connect the explanation of fractions to an adding of fractions
example to quicken the example. Since the concept was already taught it was easy to
connect the review together to give more time for examples and the game. Overall the
first class taught to these groups of students was very well done and would have been
fantastic with minor modification
