Course Teaching Associates : -

Course Objective: To enable the learners to analyze various mechanisms kinematically and dynamically.
Course Rationale:

This course is designed to provide learner an understanding that enables her/him to implement the
basic tools of kinematics analysis to analyze various mechanisms, viz... Various 4 bar mechanisms,
cams, gears, for their kinematic parameters. Further, learner also performs dynamic analysis of
various reciprocating and rotating systems.

Mechanisms and Machines: Introduction to Plane and Space Mechanisms, Kinematic Pairs, Kinematic
Chains and their Inversions, Mobility and range of movement - Kutzbach and Grublers criterion, Grashofs
criterion.
Velocity analysis: Velocity analysis using IC and relative velocity method. Acceleration analysis.
Cams: cam profiles of knife edge, roller and offset followers of reciprocating motion.
Gears and Gear trains: Gears terminology, fundamental law of gearing, involute profile. Interference and
undercutting.
Gear Trains simple, compound and epicyclic gear trains.
Balancing: Introduction, Static balancing, dynamic balancing, transferring of a Force from one plane to
another, Balancing of Several Masses in Different planes, Balancing of Reciprocating Mass, Secondary
Balancing.
Dynamic force analysis: Force analysis of Slider crank mechanism.
Gyroscopes: Gyroscopic Effect on Naval Ships, Stability of an Automobile, Stability of a Two-Wheel vehicle.

Software)/Drawing hall for practicing

1. Simulation and study of four bar mechanisms


2. Simulation and study of slider crank mechanisms
3. Simulation and study of crank and slotted lever mechanisms
4. Velocity analysis of (i) 4bar mechanisms (ii) Slider crank mechanisms (iii) Quick return mechanisms

(Velocity diagrams to be practiced in drawing hall)


5. Acceleration analysis of (i) 4bar mechanisms (ii) Slider crank mechanisms (iii) Quick return

mechanisms (Acceleration diagrams to be practiced in drawing hall)


6. Cam profiles of knife edge and roller followers (i) Radial and (ii) offset followers. (Cam profiles to be

practiced in drawing hall)


7. To analyse kinematically compound gear trains
8. To analyse kinematically Epicyclic gear trains
9. Balancing of several masses rotating (i) in the same plane and (ii) in different planes.
10. To study the gyroscopic effect on naval ships and two wheeler vehicles.
