Pastors Corner
Every morning in my email "inbox," I receive a daily devotional from the Church of the
Resurrection in Kansas City. Staff and volunteers write these devotionals based on the
season and on the particular sermon series the Rev. Adam Hamilton is engaged. I find them
meaningful and helpful to my spiritual growth, and perhaps you have your own favorite daily
devotional. Because there is no sermon at the Maundy Thursday Tenebrae service, I am
reprinting today's devotional from Church of the Resurrection about the Last Supper, written
by their young adult pastor, the Rev. Chris Abel:
While they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them, and said,
Take; this is my body. He took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it. He said to
them, This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. I assure you that I wont drink wine
again until that day when I drink it in a new way in Gods kingdom. After singing songs of praise, they went
out to the Mount of Olives. Mark 14:22-26
Mark put few details in his brief account of the Last Supper. But anyone who knew the Jewish faith would have
known that the last hallel (hymn of praise) Hebrews sang at Passover was Psalm 118. Mark also said Jesus
tied his last meal with the disciples to Jeremiahs promise of a new covenant, in which God pledged to
engrave his instructions on each heart open to Gods love. Then Jeremiah added Gods merciful promise: I
will forgive their wrongdoing and never again remember their sins (Jeremiah 31:31-34).
Psalm 118:6 said, The Lord is for meI wont be afraid. What can anyone do to me? Verse 17 said, I wont
dieno, I will live and declare what the Lord has done. How do you think those words strengthened Jesus as
he sang them in the Upper Room just hours before his crucifixion? How do those words speak to any fears you
carry in your heart? Jeremiah linked God engraving Gods instructions on our hearts (an echo of the stone
