A Family of Three-Switch Three-State Single-Phase
Z-Source Inverters
Abstract
This project proposes a new family of three-switch three-state single-
phase Z-source inverters (TSTS-ZSIs) that can be classified into two
groups, boost-based TSTS-ZSI and buck boost-based TSTS-ZSI,
according to the step-up circuit. All of the topologies have the merits of
buckboost capability and low voltage stress, and some of them have the
feature of dual grounding. In addition, the step-up in dc side and
inversion in ac side is completely decoupled in the proposed topologies.
In terms of a linear voltage gain, the conventional linear control methods
can be used, which makes the control system very simple
Introduction
The traditional voltage-source and current-source inverters are widely
used in industry applications such as ac motor drives, uninterruptible
power supplies and distributed power systems. One of the characteristics
of the traditional inverter is that its output voltage is always lower
(higher) than the input dc voltage. For some applications, where both
buck and boost voltage are demanded, an additional boost (buck) dcdc
converter is needed before the inverter, which not only increases the cost,
but also reduces the reliability of the system. In order to overcome the
disadvantages of the conventional inverter, a large number of single-stage
inverters with buck boost capability are proposed . Z-source converter

Methodology
Based on the analysis of the characteristics of existing single phase ZSI,
this project puts forward a family of improved topologies called three-
switch three-state single-phase ZSIs (TSTSZSIs) that can be classified
into two groups, boost-based TSTSZSI and buckboost-based TSTS-ZSI,
according to the step-up circuit type. Compared with the traditional
single-phase ZSI, the proposed topologies reduce the number of power
switches and volume of the Z-impedance network capacitors, lower the
voltage stress and furthermore, some of them can share the dc source
ground point. In contrast to the single-phase semi-ZSI and semi quasi-ZSI
proposed they possess the following better features:buckboost
capability, low voltage stress, and linear output voltage gain that
simplifies the control system by adding an extra switch, inductance, and
capacitance.
