In this experiment we have done 4 type of heat treatments. The first one is annealing.

Annealing is a process where the specimen is heated and left inside the furnace until the
furnace temperature reach room temperature. This is a slow cool process. Annealing is most
often used to soften a metal for cold working, to improve machinability, or to enhance
properties like electrical conductivity. As shown in the impact test table, annealed material has
more energy absorbed which is 101 J. which make it a ductile material because tough materials
absorb a lot of energy.

Next heat treatment is normalizing whereas the specimen is removed rapidly and set to cool
on the ceramic base. So, basically it is using a medium of air to cooldown. The function of
the ceramic base is to withstand high temperature so that it can handle the specimen.
Normalizing is basically gives harder and stronger steel, but with less ductility for the same
composition than full annealing. as shown in the hardness test table, normalizing is moree
hardness than annealing.
As shown in the hardness test table in result. The hardness of quench hardening is higher
than the remaining treatment. Between them, water gives more hardness. However, in the
impact test table. Oil has higher energy absorbed than water. Since, the less the enerdy is
absorbed, the more brittle the material. So, water in quenching gives a ductile material a
britlle properties.
