Stop Hunger Now/Rise Against Hunger packaging event

Come join friends from around the Charlottesville District to package
meals for the hungry. All ages welcome, so bring the family! Come to
Rodes UMC in Afton TODAY at 1:30 pm, worship to follow. Help the
District Youth reach their goal of $3,000 by making a contribution.

A professionally staffed nursery is available for children birth through
age three during all services and Sunday School on the lower level. An
usher will be happy to direct you. Additionally, a Parent Room is
available in the Parlor adjacent to the Sanctuary, for viewing and hearing
all services. Please ask an usher to show you the way. All restrooms are
equipped with changing tables.
Autism Speaks
There will be a volunteer information session for Autism Speaks TODAY
at 4pm in Room 208. This will be led by Fay Painter, AUMC member,
who is the Executive Director of Autism Speaks, National Capital Area
Chapter (serving Virginia, Maryland and DC). All are invited to

Vacation Bible School!
Vacation Bible School is right around the corner! Our first volunteer
meeting will be Sunday, May 7th at 10:05 in the finished fellowship hall
downstairs. VBS will be Monday through Thursday (June 26th-June 29th)
from 5:30pm-8:15pm. Whether you've already signed up to volunteer or
just want to know more before you commit - YOU'RE INVITED! We need
volunteers who want to work with kiddos and even have great spots for
volunteers who aren't available during the evenings or don't feel called
to hang out with kiddos for 3 hours each evening. We'll find the perfect
fit for you! Don't forget if you'd like to know more or want to
volunteer, please mark the bulletin flap and place in the offering plate.

 Collection for Emergency Food Network
TODAY is the last day!
The Outreach & Missions Team will be collecting food items for the
Emergency Food Network during the month of April. Suggested items
include: Breakfast cereal, canned fruit, canned pasta with sauce, canned
vegetables, baking mixes for cakes/breads/pancake mixes, coffee/tea.
Place your contributions in the collection bins in the Reed Room and the
Welcome Center. Monetary donations are also welcome. Please make
checks payable to AUMC with EFN on the memo line.
Paschal Candle
Aldersgate Church will be lighting a paschal candle for worship services
during the Great Fifty Days of Easter. The paschal candle will help us
remember that Easter is not just one Sunday but a fifty day season from
Jesus' resurrection to Pentecost. The paschal candle that Aldersgate
Church is lighting is 36 inches tall and is adorned with wax symbols of
Easter Lilies. The Easter Lily is a symbol of the resurrection of Jesus
Christ, rebirth, and a new beginning. Sometimes called the Easter candle
or Christ candle, the name, paschal candle, comes from pasach, the
Hebrew word for Passover. The candle symbolizes the light of Christ
banishing darkness and death. This tall white candle represents Christs
steadfast presence in our midst.

John Wesley and the People Called "Methodist':
Understanding and Claiming our Methodist Roots
A New Study Begins the Week of May 15th

In 1728, John Wesley and a small group of "Methodists" began a
renewal movement within the Church of England that has grown to a
world-wide movement with more than 80 million members in 80
denominations and more than 130 countries world-wide. In our study,
we will begin with examining church history and the roots of
Methodism. We will look at England in the time of Wesley. We will
examine our United Methodist history, including growth and struggles.
We will examine some of John Wesley's writings. We will look at
Methodist theology and practice with an eye toward learning if there is
anything to reclaim from our Methodist roots.
This study is being designed for people who might be studying
this subject for the first time and those who have been part of other
studies on Methodist. Each class is scheduled for approximately 1-1/4 to
1-1/2 hour. Class will meet once a week. You will only need a Bible for
the class. Additional hand-outs will be provided. Currently there will a
class on Tuesday mornings at 10:00am, and Pastor Rob is seeking the
Aldersgate Churchs interest in having an evening class beginning at
7:00pm.
