FUNCTION OF PDL

: "ACT a "SUPPORTIVE.1
Main function of PDL is
supportive of teeth in their socket.
Attaches between tooth and
bone
And tooth and cementum.
Resist different forces during
(masticatory , Brushing , shock,
orthodontic appliance).

: "Act a"SENSORY .2
PDL supplied by abundant
nerves and receptors that sense
any movement in function.
Nerve send signals of pressure
to brain which controlled at
Temporomandibular joint and
muscles of mastication.

"Act a "NUTRiTiVE (3
The ligament contains blood
vessels.
This Blood vessels provide
nutrition for ligament and hard
tissue of cementum and alveolar
bone to the cells of PDL .
when appliance heavy forces on
tooth occur (COMPRESSION AND
CONSTRICTION) of Blood vessels,
so that soft tissue are changes
and leads to necrosis of cells and
loss of alveolar bone.

:Act a MAINTANCE (4
Tissue are forming and
responding rapidly in
masticatory apparatus .These
tissues function for lifetime, if
health is maintained and
appropriate care provided.

AGE CHANGES IN PDL

1. Cell number and activity
decrease with aging.
2. The bone and cementum are
scalloping
3. By age there is detachment of
cervical fibers of PDL due to apical
migration of junction epithelium.
4. Decrease vascularity.
5. The thickness become thinner
due to decrease activity.
6. Cementicles may be found.
