CHAPTER 2 LESSON 2

LINEAR EQUATIONS
ASHLEY DANDO
Vocab
A function whose graph is a line is a linear function. You can represent a linear function with a linear equation,

Because the value of y depends on the value of x, y is called the dependent variable and x is called the
independent variable.

The y-intercept of a line is the point at which the line crosses the y-axis. You can use the same term to identify
the y-coordinate of this point.

The x-intercept of a line is the point at which the line crosses the x-axis. You can use the same term to identify
the x-coordinate of this point.

The standard form of a linear equation is Ax + By = C, where A, B, and C are real numbers, and A and B are not
both zero. You can graph a linear equation in standard form by finding the x- and y-intercepts.
Vocab Continued
The slope of a nonvertical line is the ratio of the vertical change to a corresponding
horizontal change. You can calculate slope by subtracting the corresponding
coordinates of two points on the line.

The point-slope form of an equation of a line is y y1 = m(x x1)

The slope-intercept form of an equation of a line is y = mx + b, where m is the slope

and b is the y-intercept.

If you want, you can make a table of numbers to
help to find the ordered pairs.
