he North and South forks of
Long Island represent some
of the most beautiful and
exclusive zip codes in the country. From
the ghosts of old money in small-town
Southampton to the quintessentially
East coast surfing beaches of Montauk, now largely displaced native American
the Hamptons have long been a
weekend getaway for New
Yorkers and a summer holiday
destination in its own right.
Though the morning following
Labor Day was once known as
tumbleweed Tuesday, after the
exodus of New York society’s Calvin Klein. architecture that

in recent years the townships that
make up this countryside vacation
spot have become increasingly year-
round destinations. Not only are the
Hamptons home to some of the most
desirable real estate and landscape
available, they also represent a
mythologized ideal of the all-American

Before the Hamptons were a
summer colony, the woodlands and
beaches of Long Island were home to a homes, many of the refugees who
tradition, which gave names to town-
ships such as Montauk, Amagan-
sett and Quogue. In 1648 the
British arrived, migrating from
Massachusetts to Southampton
and bringing with them much
of the European-style

that 2,000 artists still live and work in
the Hamptons. As well as this strong
artistic presence, several designers
and directors have built homes on
the east end of Long Island. Alec
Baldwin, who grew up in Mass-
apequa, now owns an Amagansett
property complete with its

Hamptons properties have historically held great value. This is due

Amagansett
Amagansett is one of the Hamptons’ most tranquil townships, which
may go some way to explaining the volume of celebrity residents who
call it home. The proximity of the bay and ocean in the hamlet make
for a cosiness that lacks in some of the region’s larger towns, but the
once-functional farmhouses are now beautifully finished rustic homes
occupied by those who can afford the high prices they command.
Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller summered in Amagansett coast and
little has changed on its unspoilt beaches since then. Real estate is in
high demand here, and listings are rarely lower than $3 million. Current
