Task Description:

During the unit Fight for your Rights! you will be learning about the struggle for rights and freedoms for
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in Australia in the last century. For this task, you will present a
multimodal presentation on a chosen civil rights issue using a central question and 3 focus questions. In
addition, you will provide a written annotated bibliography for your research using source analysis skills.

The assessment task will assess your ability to:

Identify and locate relevant sources, using ICT and other methods

Select and use a range of communication forms (oral, graphic, written) and digital
technologies

Identify and analyse different historical interpretations, including your own

The assessment task is divided into two parts a multimodal presentation and an annotated bibliography.

Task Steps:

Part a) Multimodal presentation

1. Select one of the following topics: The Freedom Ride; 1962 right to vote federally; 1967 Referendum;
Mabo decision (Native Title), Bringing Them Home Report.
2. Answer the following central question about your topic:

Central Question: Why is this civil rights issue significant for Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander People?

3. Use the following focus questions to guide your research and structure your argument:

Focus Question 1: What is the historical background of the topic?

Focus Question 2: How was the change achieved?

Focus Question 3: Why did Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people want this change to
occur?

Use databases and search engines to locate sources to answer the focus questions. Use between 5-
7 sources.

4. Write an oral presentation between 4-5 minutes in length that answers the central question. This
should be written in oral essay structure.

5. Create a PREZI presentation (using text and images/graphics) to accompany your spoken oral.

Part b) Annotated bibliography.

1. Complete an annotated APA bibliography for the sources used in your multimodal presentation.

Task Conditions:

The multimodal presentation should be 4-5 minutes and should use PREZI and oral communication.
The annotated APA bibliography should use a maximum of 7 sources. Each annotation should be
100-150 words and written in a Word Document.
You must use at least 1 primary source.

Teacher conference/monitoring:

In week 6, you will be required to have a teacher conference. The purpose of a teacher conference is to
discuss your assignment progress using your checklist. It also gives you an opportunity to ask specific
questions.

Allocated time:

You will be given 4 weeks to complete the task. 8 class lessons in the computer labs will be dedicated to
assignment work. You may have to complete additional work at home or in the library.

Submission:

You will be required to submit your PREZI (with your name) into the class drop box on the due date. Your
presentation will be video recorded for marking and moderation. You will need to submit a paper copy of your
annotated bibliography, with a task sheet and marking rubric.
