Sprinkler Design

Calculation required

Piping layout with pipe sizes

Pump flow rate and head
Water storage

Design steps

1. Get the drawn area which sprinkler system need to design. Check the hazard classes

2. Check system protection area limitation

3. Get design area; () = ( 3)

Then select design area symmetrically as much as possible

4. =
(19)

5. = 1.2

A = Design area

S = Distance between SPK in branch line (table 19)

( 4)
6. = ( 5)

7. =

8. Select SPK and K factor using table 37

9. Select piping arrangement based on sprinkler piping arrangement given in lecture note

10. Calculate space between branch line

11. Calculate space between SPK , this should less than figures given in table 19

12. Select range piping using table 27 and 30

13. Select distribution piping using table 31

14. Then select design point

15. Do hydraulic calculation to decide pipe size from design point to control valve
a. Refer table 8-5.2.2, 8-5.3.2(a), A-8-5.4

b. Use Hazen-Williams formula for pipe sizing

6.05105
p = C1.85 d4.87 L Q1.85 , where Q=1000 l/min and P< 0.5 bar

Assume pipe sizes and check P< 0.5 bar requirement and select the pipe

16. Then draw the total piping arrangement

17. Find system flow rate using table 6

18. Calculate head

a. Identify the pipe path the pressure at the hydraulically most unfavorably (far) situated SPK,
when all the SPK in the area of operation are in operation,
b. Pump discharge head consists of 6 components and 10% extra head for future expansions,
if required.

Equation = = %

H1 - Pipe frictional losses

H2 - Frictional losses due to fittings and valves
H3 - Frictional losses in SPK
H4 - Total static head (Both suction and discharge)
H5 - SPK discharge head
H6 - Loss in pump
c. H1 & H2 can calculate using Hazen-Williams formula and table 22 & 23
d. H3 can get using data sheets
e. H4 need to calculate from schematics and pipe path layouts
f. H5 Given in lecture note under item 13.4.4 ( use total no of SPK in area of operation)
g. H6 again from pump manufacture

19. Water storage : generally given in BS number of minute operate with hazard class or can get
from Fire regulation
20. Then all required details calculated
Landing Valve/Wet system Design
