Chapter 1
Functional Description
According to the definition in 3GPP R6, DPCCH slot format in which the pilot domain
occupies more bits (8bits at most) to ensure the data decoding reliability is adapted to
the case when UL data is being transmitted. In UL_DTX, the primary purpose of the
continuous DPCCH when UL data is not being transmitted is to maintain synchronization
and power control in order to ready for a rapid resumption of data transmission when
needed. Therefore, new UL DPCCH slot format 4 (4 TPC symbols, 6 pilot symbols)
balancing the reliability of channel estimation and power control is introduced in 3GPP R7.
As there is no TFCI and no FBI field is used, the number of pilot bits is then 6 (instead of
8). The number of TPC bits is increased for power control from 2 to 4 allowing for a trade
off between increased power control reliability and reduced UL DPCCH transmit power.
The new slot format slot#4 defined in R7 protocol is used in UL_DTX. UE slot format
can be set or adjusted by SRNC based on UE capability according to different scenes.
There is no switch control for the using of UL DPCCH slot format 4, and it means the
activation/de-activation of UL DPCCH slot format function only depends on UE capability
and specified algorithms instead of any switch parameters (including switch parameter
CpcSuptInd) or the activation/de-activation of any other CPC functions. The parameters
of DPCCH slot format defined in 3GPP are listed in below.

Chapter 2
Deployment in commercial
network and user benefit
This feature provides new UL DPCCH slot format. In case of UEs without data
transmission, the new slot format is adopted, which can add TPC bits and reduce DPCCH
power. As a result, the UEs without data transmission can gain benefit of reduced UL
control channel interference. This is profitable not only to improve system UL capacity,
but also to reduce UE power consumption.
The definition of DPCCH slot format in 3GPP R6 is suitable for UL data transmission. In
order to ensure decoding reliability, more pilot bits are occupied (8 bits). Upon adoption
of UL DTX, when there is no UL data transmission, continuous transmission of DPCCH is
suitable for data synchronization and power control. Later when there is data transmission,
the UL transmission can quickly restore to normal non-DTX transmission status. In 3GPP
R7, new UL slot format 4 is added. This slot format is introduced in order to pursue balance
between channel estimation and power control reliability. It contains only 6 pilot bits and 4
TPC bits. Meanwhile, FBI and TFCI bits are absent. The advantage of 4 TPC bits is that
the reliability of power control is improved. This means DPCCH transmission power can
be reduced (DPCCH transmission power in R7 is reduced by 2~4dB than R6). Hence, the
UEs without data transmission can gain benefit of reduced UL control channel interference.
This is lucrative not only to improve system UL capacity, but also to reduce UE power
consumption.
