Leadership Involvement Service Diversity

The Office of Student Engagement & Diversity is seeking a UNLV student to fulfill the position of Graphic
Designer with a provisional start date of July 31, 2017. Student Engagement & Diversity is driven by the core
values of Leadership, Involvement, Service, and Diversity. The office provides educational endeavors,
resources, and involvement opportunities guided by an unwavering commitment to social justice, community
building, diversity, civic engagement, leadership, and global perspective enacted through a holistic learning
environment that engages students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Purpose
This position is responsible for the timely and consistent completion of various graphic design projects.
Individuals holding this position must have a comprehensive graphic design skillset, including knowledge of
design programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. This person must be adept in design
research, concept building, brainstorming, revision techniques, layout design, proofreading, and assessment of
graphical elements. This person also must be able to communicate to clients, including students, faculty, and
staff members, on a daily basis through email correspondence, phone, and in-person consultations. The Graphic
Designer will provide effective customer service at all times while fulfilling a needed role within our office.

Minimum Qualifications
o Must be available to work at least 10 hours per week
o Previous graphic design experience (classwork or job experience)
o Competencies in following software: Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign
o Ability to proofread for grammar and spelling
o Knowledge of typography, layout design, composition, and image resolution
o Ability to generate original content and ideas (creativity)
o Maintain a minimum 2.25 cumulative GPA and 2.0 semester GPA (Campus Life GPA Policy)
o Must be enrolled as an undergraduate student taking a minimum of 6 credits at UNLV
o In good standing with the university and the Office of Student Conduct

Preferred Qualifications
o Passion for student engagement, diversity, and values consistent with the offices core values
o Ability to multitask, prioritize, with excellent time management skills
o Ability to adapt to sudden changes in workflow
o Established problem-solving and customer service skills
o Familiarity with marketing techniques and branding

Tasks
Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
o Design marketing collateral for department campaigns, events, and programs
o Work with internal clients with diverse perspectives to execute their project ideas
o Provide drafts for large and small-scale digital and print materials under strict deadlines
o Incorporate feedback into design projects and offer alternative suggestions when needed
o Brainstorm new marketing ideas as requested and bring them to execution
o Maintain an organized work schedule for client consultations

o Organize digital files and archive projects as they are completed


o Administrative tasks and other duties as assigned

Types of Design Projects


o Posters, postcards, fliers
o Yard signs, billboards, large banners
o Merchandise and giveaways (water bottles, t-shirts, tote bags, etc.)
o Logo design, branding, promotional campaigns
o Digital media (banners, website headers, social media, plasma screens, etc.)
o Brochures, event calendars, newsletters, and more

Criteria for Success

o Have a comprehensive knowledge of campus offices, departments, and resources

student information, emergency policies, and procedures

Learning Outcomes and Evaluation


Students in this position will learn the following over the course of their employment:
o Understand how I can better develop strategies that will help me determine a guests needs and issues
o Learn how I can better articulate how my role impacts a guests personal experience
o Determine strategies to motivate myself and others towards a common goal
o Develop time management skills that will help me prioritize tasks and responsibilities in a timely manner
o Demonstrate the use of creativity, consensus, and trust building in problem solving
o Improve my ability to plan and organize projects, communicate with others, build leadership skills, manage
stress, understand and appreciate human differences, and recognize the role of technology in the workplace

Student staff are evaluated (supervisor, self-evaluation, client surveys) based on transparent criteria after their
first six weeks and every semester thereafter. Exit interviews are conducted upon separation of employment.

Pay rate: $10.00 per hour | Hours: 10 per week (possibility of up to 15 hours during peak times)
