Lesson Plan

Pre-K Literacy Workstation

a. Learning Station
i. The station that will be developed is about recognizing orally and
graphically the letters of the Alphabet.
ii. Students will be able to do so by identifying the sound that the first letter
from names of certain objects and then placing them by categories
according to the letter they start with.
iii. This activity could be a variety of a matching game, since the students
have to relate an image with a letter in order to complete the assignment.
b. Directions
An easy way to explain the activity to the students would be like the following one:
i. Cut all the objects from the Cut and Paste Sheet.
ii. Watch the objects taken out from the Mysterious Letter Bag.
iii. Paste them in the table given on the row of the letter that they start
with.
iv. Share your answers with the rest of the class.
**Instructions are also included in the Handouts.
c. Objective
The main skills that students can develop within this activity are:
i. Phonological and Phonemic Awareness: Since students have to identify
the first sound of certain words they are putting into practice this skill
which in one of the fundamental reading components.
ii. Alphabetic Principle: Once they have identified the sound, they have to
relate it to the symbol that it pertains. This allows students to recognize
the alphabets oral and graphic representations.
iii. Fine Motor Skills: These skills are polished since students have to be able
to cut fine and thin lines in order to paste them in the given table. This can
also help with their spatial perception when they calculate how much
space do they have to paste the images.
iv. Public Speaking: In order to reinforce the learning of the students they
should share the answers with their classmates explaining why they
choose a determined category for an object.
d. Creativity
i. The title given for this learning station is Mysterious Letter Bag. I choose
this title in order to keep students interested in the activity, since they
dont know what to expect, hopefully they will pay attention to the entire
lesson.
ii. This station is a Developmentally Appropiate Practice since Pre-K
students, that usually are between ages 3 and 5, are barely learning the
alphabet and this station can reinfroce their knowledge. It is also very
important to teach them the relationship between a letters symbol and
the sound that it makes. (Phonological and Phonemic Awareness)
iii. The basic steps for the preparation of the activity are:
1. Get 3 or 4 objects that start with the same letter for each letter of
the alphabet (ex. Balloon, Book, Button, start with B) and if the
activity is going to be used with younger students then only the
vowels should be used.
2. After selecting the objects they should be placed into a container,
separating them by letters. Paper bags can be used so that
students are unable to see what is inside of them. Boxes can be
used or other materials.
3. The handouts needed are a table that contains all the letters that
are going to be used in the lesson, a sheet that has images of all
the objects that are inside the containers in order to have students
cut and paste them and if desired a copy of the instructions and a
grading rubric.
4. Once in the class one or more volunteers can be chosen to take the
objects out from each bag and name them. Then the teacher would
need to make emphazise in the first sound that every word makes
so that the students are able to identify them.
5. Finally students get to paste the objects by the group of the letter
they start with and they can share their answers with the class and
even have a little discussion if there is some controversy.
e. Assessment
i. Since the students targeted for this lesson are very young, the assessment
process has to be very simple. This is why I choose the Star Points which
are something very easy to understand. The rubric given explains that if
the student did an good job in the letter recognition, cutting and pasting
and presenting they will get 3 Star Points for each category. However if
they do poorly they will only obtain one star point for each.
