Putting the “fun” back into Horses

February 2010 Newsletter

Next Meeting: Tuesday, February 23, 2010, at The Stanley Tavern, at 7:30.
REMINDER: THIS IS YOUR LAST NEWSLETTER, ANY MEMBERSHIP NOT RECIEVED BY FEBRUARY MEETING WILL BE VOID.

Minutes from January Meeting

The meeting started at 7:30, with 17 members present. The minutes were read with 2 errors. First correction, the
trophies were High Point Senior, Performance High Point, and Sportmanship. Second correction is that Tammy handed
out all the remaining buckles. Motion to accept the minutes was made by Lorraine, seconded by Kathy, all were in favour.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Balance is $3,914.84, with nothing outstanding. Motion to accept report was made by Bill,
seconded by Ian.

COMMUNICATIONS: The club does have any mail for discussion. In the past
LLHA used to exchange newsletters with other clubs, and we will look into
starting this again. The Stanley Hotel
SPORTS: We need raffle prizes, or anything anyone is willing to donate. Any Highway 588
extra items will go towards the banquet, or to the youth.
This summer we need volunteers to help out at our events. All students Home of the Famous
who volunteer can use these hours towards their volunteer hours. "STANLEY BURGER"
All dates have been set. The regular gymkhana dates are, May 30,
June 13, July 25, August 1 and 22, and October 3. The Old Timer’s gymkhanas Open 7 days a week
are, June 27, and August 15. Youth Fun Day is July 10. Thunderstakes will be
September 10. 12 Noon to 1 a.m.
SHOW: Show dates have been set, the first show is June 6. The second show
Kakabeka, Falls, ON
will have a clinic the day before, which will be September 25, and the show will POT 1WO
be September 26. The judge will be Sandra Donald from Brandon, Manitoba,
and will here for the two days. (807)-473-9261
WAYS & MEANS: We would like to do a meat draw, which will be open to the public. We would also like to do weekly
draws that are for members only.
We will be having a Barn Dance, at Founder’s Museum, for a social event. The date has not yet been decided but
it will be either at the end of March, or beginning of April. We hope to have a live band, and for it be a licensed event.
We will be having a fundraising BBQ this May long weekend, at the Odena in Kakabeka. Bill has volunteered to
run this event.
We need to have the Sponsorship packages available as soon as possible. We would like to start approaching
potential sponsors, and would like to produce the packages when doing so. We need to have these packages available at
the meetings so any members can try to get sponsors. Please let Rob or Phil know, of all donating sponsors.
This year we would like to get barrel covers. The cost is yet unknown, but we are looking into getting major
sponsors to donate. These sponsors would have their logo on the covers.

PUBLICITY: Terri-Lynn has made LLHA brochures, and is waiting for all dates, and information to be confirmed before
printing. I hope to distribute these brochures to hotels, schools, malls, stores, horse events and barns. They will be
available to all members to distribute as well.
Debbie may be able to sew the barrel covers, but we would need to find a way to get the logos put on.

YOUTH: No report.
OLD BUSINESS: The End of the Year awards is not listed in the constitution. The High Point awards will be discussed
further. There was a disagreement as to why should LLHA give out double, when there was only one show. It was argued
if this has been done in the past, or not. It was mentioned that even with the one show, it would be nice if the High Point
winner could be recognized at the Award Banquet.
Frank would like Kathy, to write out a set of rules, about high point, which she would like to add, or change. A
LLHA committee will review it, and make a motion if we would like to adopt these rules, and add them to the constitution.
Kathy will have this ready for the February meeting.
The rules that pertain to steadying poles and barrels will be discussed at the March meeting, when we review our
club rules.

NEW BUSINESS: LLHA removed the OAS membership form from the newsletter last
year, but it will once again be included in the newsletter this year.
OAS voted last year that they will let us use their kitchen, and we will have our
own locker. Frank will attend their next meeting to get all the details.
We need to replace the ropes in the ring, in order to make set up times faster.
We will approach OAS for permission.
In the past, we used to have opening ceremonies at every gymkhana, but for
some reason they ceased. (We believe it was a time issue). This year, and Certified Horseman
continuing, we will once again have our opening ceremonies at the beginning of every Association
gymkhana. Ceremonies will include carrying of the flags and O’ Canada, and will take Level 2 English & Western
place morning and afternoon, before the Youth Division and Open Division start.
Coach
A question arose about the future LLHA. Where do our members see our club
in three years? Or perhaps in five years? We feel we need to move forward in order
to make the club thrive, or we will just become stagnate. We are asking our members Experience in Hunter,
to band together to make this club stronger. If anyone has any ideas, suggestions, or Western Pleasure, Saddle
any questions or concerns, we wish and ask you to come forward. If you wish to stay Seat, Hunter Over Fences,
anonymous, we welcome you to write your suggestions or thoughts down, and either Gymkhana & Trail.
seal it in an envelope to mail, or drop off at a meeting, or LLHA event, or email
llha@live.com, and it will be forwarded directly to the President.
A motion was made and the question was does LLHA want their own property? Bill seconded the motion, and it
will be voted on at the February meeting.
There was a concern about money for the property. Currently, we are not worrying about finances, we are asking
if there is a desire, and if there is any motivation on striving to attain our own land, and the endless opportunities that
would give us.
Kathy would like LLHA barrel racing to be sanctioned by the MBRA. We could advertise in their newsletter in
hopes of drawing people to come here to compete. You would need to be their member, in order to qualify for their
events. Their website is www.mbra.ca. Kathy will have more information at the next meeting.
Timer Our timer is working fine, however, it is aging and needs to be updated and replaced. We are looking at a
timer that automatically tallies all the times and placings. This new timer
would lessen the paperwork, and eliminate room for error. We are still
ROYAL researching to see if is compatible with our board, or if we need to change
software. We estimate the cost to be approximate $800, therefore, we need to
Hair Design come together to raise the funds.
I, Terri-Lynn, mentioned that I would like see the club hosts some social
Kathy Johnston or fun events. I remember when LLHA used to be more than just gymkhanas,
122 N. Brodie Street and shows. I believe that by reintroducing non-competitive events, it would
phone: 628-6298 give us an opportunity to mingle in a less stressful environment, producing a
UNISEX, Colours, Highlights, Foils & Cuts stronger membership and creating new friendships. I also hope it would
attract some members from the past to come back, or for other members, such
as me who don’t gymkhana anymore, but still love this club, a chance to
participate and stay activate within the club, and to meet members. Therefore, I approached Dianne McParland, who
owns Rockin’ M Ranch, a place that has plenty of beautiful trails, if she would be interested in hosting trail rides for LLHA.
I have offered my place, Inspiration Farms, as a co-host if necessary, since our property joins. She happily agreed and
we have set two tentative dates. The first ride will be Saturday July 17, and it would be a poker run and maybe a potluck.
The second will be just a fun fall trail ride and will be on Saturday September 11. The fee has not yet been determined,
but all proceeds will go to the club.
It was mentioned that a group of us trail rides in the summer every week at Dianne’s, and perhaps we could make
that into an LLHA event, where everyone who rides donates, and all proceeds go to the club.
There is a barrel racing clinic, in Pine Ridge Manitoba, on March 27- and 28 with Elaine and Jim Hyde. The cost
is $300. For more information call Kathy @ 628-6298, or email @ royalhairdesign@tbaytel.net.
Dates were given for the Paint Club. (Please see newsletter for all dates listed).
We would like to see the points from other club shows ie, Agriplex, Hymers, Murillo, accumulate to LLHA High
Point Year End. We would then like to add a fifth trophy, Walk/Trot. In order to do this all clubs involve must govern by
the same rules. LLHA might have to change some rules, ie. Youth, because Hymers has different age groups. We must
look at other categories and rules and basic qualifying classes. In the past, it was up to the individual to collect their show
points and get them signed by the show secretary. The show committee must sit down and write a set of rules, and
awards that will be put into the constitution, so nothing changes and varies from year to year.
The Paint Club and Gaited Clubs would like classes added to our show for them. They would like to purchase
their own trophies and present them at our banquet.
The Arab club, that has been inactive for years, may be starting back up again and may be interested in having a
class in our show as well.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:55.

Rob would like motion that instead of a 50/50 draw, all money collected would be a donation and stays toward the club for
the timer fund.
