CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

The research study to be conducted is entitled ChaCart. ChaCart is a

modified version of a push cart that has the ability to charge cellular phones while

shopping in grocery stores. The energy required for the phone to be charged will

be coming from the movement of the wheels of the push cart.

This energy will be converted into electrical energy which will be stored

in a storage device that will be able to transfer the converted energy to the cellular

phone.

Background of the Study

In 1937, a man named Mr. Sylvan Goldman who was an Oklahoma

gracer, observed that customers stopped shopping once they feel that their hand

baskets get too heavy. Eager to persuade customers to buy more, he envisioned a

basket with wheels. That was how the first push carts were invented. Developing

the grocery push carts into easier equipment never stopped. Some had new

designs like adding baby seats, changing into bigger baskets, or better wheels.

Even now, there are new designs of push carts introduced in other countries. This

study is mainly about modifying the grocery push carts used by many private

markets.

Statement of the Problem

1
This study aims to create a push cart with a cellular phone charger powered by the

converted mechanical energy from wheels. Specifically, this study sought to

answer the following:

1. To determine if the mechanical energy from the wheels is capable of

making the charger work.

2. To determine if the converted mechanical energy will be enough to reach

the required amount of stored energy (1500 mah ) of the cellular phone

charger.

3. To determine if the converted mechanical energy will cause the battery to

swell or to produce excessive amount of heat.

Significance of the Study

This study aims to make a shopping cart with a built in charger

powered by converted mechanical energy to provide chargers for

customers while shopping. Nowadays, people get more busy each day

thats why they tend to forget to do a lot of important things like charging

their cellular phones. Because of this, they have nothing to use to

communicate with others and also to compute for their expenses while

shopping. This study also aims to provide time for charging cellular

phones. Cellular phones are one of the essential things in a persons daily

life and would have a hard time surviving the day without it. This study

will give you the ability to do two things of the same time. You can charge

your cellular phone while doing your grocery shopping. In this way, you

2
dont have to allot time from your busy schedule just to charge your

cellular phones. The energy used by the charger is from the movement of

the wheels. Its source is purely from the movement and not from any

electrical source and may also reduce electrical energy consumption. It

may help the environment problems we encounter today.

This study will also provide a more convenient and economic way

to charge your phones.

Scope and Delimitation

The researchers study is called Chacart- charger push cart, a

device that will provide an alternative source of energy. The materials that

the researchers will need to be able to conduct the experiment are push

carts, wheels, dynamo, storage device and USB ports, wires, cellular

phone connectors and cellular phone holders. These materials will be

purchased and afterwards will be arranged to be able to create a modified

version of the conventional push carts. There are certain processes that

need to be undergone for the construction of the push cart. After

constructing the push cart, we will test different conditions that may affect

the effectivity of the mechanical energy to empower the cellular phone

charger.

The researchers will first construct the push cart by welding it to be

able to hold 6 wheels. The next step will be the attachment of the dynamo

to the push carts wheels and this dynamo will also be connected to the

device where the energy will be stored. The stored device, together with

3
the cellular phone connectors and holders and other accessories needed

will finally be placed on the push cart.

The study focuses on making a functional charging device in a

push cart for those people who needs to charge their gadgets while doing

their grocery shopping. The researchers will only focus in converting the

mechanical energy to electrical energy from the movement of wheels of

the push cart. That energy will be used for the charging device to the

phones battery. The researchers will also study if there are possible side

effects of the charging device to the phones battery. The researchers will

only use cellular phones to test the charger.

However, the researchers are not concerned with the other

types of energy that can convert electrical energy and can make such

devices. This study limits the number of cellular phones that will be

charged on the cart. Other source of energy and other ways to convert

mechanical energy from the movement of the wheels are also not a scope

of this study.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Cart

A shopping cart is a cart mostly used by many malls especially

supermarkets, for their customers use. Customers can put all their desired

products to the cart. Most of the shopping carts that we can see now are made of

metal or a combination of metal or plastic. This can also come in various sizes-

some are larger ones able to carry a child. Shopping carts are designed to have

four wheels a wheels at the front and another two wheels at the back.

Generator

From this statement the light energy comes from electrical energy

generated from electrical energy generated by the dynamo Childcraft:

Discovering Science Vol. 8 page 136. It is possible to convert the energy

acquired from the movement of the wheels to electrical energy. A magnet spins

between the arms of a u-shaped iron metal inside. Around the iron metal is a large

coil of metal connected to the device. The u-shaped iron metal directs the force of

magnetism to the center of the coil of the wire. The force from the magnet start

the electrons in the wire moving. Because the magnet is spinning, the force of

magnetism is altering all the time. This makes an electric current that pushes first

one away to the wire and the other- many times a second.

Wire

5
A certain amount of resistance, conductivity and circuitry will be used to

make electrical wiring works. There will be an increase in resistance of electric

current if the wire will be narrower. The amount of current that can travel the wire

at any given moment will decrease. It must be made of conductive material in

order for the electrical charge to pass it through.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE PROTOTYPE DEVICE

Welding the Pushcart

The pushcart will be modified from a 4-wheeled pushcart to a 6-wheeled pushcart. It

will be welded into a new form that will hold the 6 wheels in place.

Improving the Wheels

The researchers will use a different kind of wheels that is bigger and can produce more
friction.

Working on the Energy Converter: Dynamo

The dynamo will be attached to the wheel and the wires of dynamo will be connected to
the storage device with the USB port.
