Thank you for purchasing the College and Career Portfolio Pack.

I created this pack

because I was unable to find a suitable and cost-efficient program with everything I
wanted my high school students to know about college and career. I hope that this is
everything you have been searching for as well!

Recommendations and Tips:

Certain parts of this packet are best done as a class, other parts can be done
individually.

Each student should have a to 1 inch three ring binder with 6 divider tabs for each
of the six parts of the portfolio.

Customize it! When you purchase this pack, you will receive these documents in a
Microsoft Word document, so you can change any of the materials to better fit your
needs. If you dont want to include certain items, then dont. If you want to include
something else NOT in this packet, then do.

Encourage lots of discussions around each area. What are kids learning about
themselves? Did they discover a new career that they have never heard of? How
has this activity impacted their lives?

Sometimes it helps to look at what career others in your family have had. For this activity, you will
create a family tree with information about what each person in your family did as a career. Start
with your name at the bottom, brothers and sisters beside you, parents/step parents above you,
grandparents above them. Create a Key to track different careers, time spent in college, and any
other important information you can compile. Create your career tree in the space below.

Do you notice any trends? Did your family all graduate from college? Did anyone change careers?

college to help pay for living expenses? Once you have talked to a parent about

Involvement
Leadership and Community Involvement

Colleges dont just look at your grades and test scores; they want to see what you are doing
in terms of leadership and community involvement. They want someone who is well-rounded
who will give back to their campus if he or she is chosen to be a student at that college. For
this part of your portfolio, you will be asked to choose to participate in either a leadership
position, or a community volunteer opportunity.

Option 1: Leadership. Everyone is a leader in some way. For this activity, you will be asked
to take on a leadership position at school. This may mean helping organize a service activity,
doing some behind-the-scenes work for a new school program, or leading a one-time student
activity for the school. Put some thought into how you would like to be a leader at school.
Write a one-page report about your leadership experiences and what you learned from
being a leader, and be sure to include at least one picture of something you helped with. You
may do this activity with one other person, but no more than three in a group. If you need
ideas, ask your teachers or school counselor.

Option 2: Volunteer. Sign up as a volunteer for an event in your community. This volunteer
activity may be done with other students, but cannot be an activity that is done as part of
the school. Suggestions may include: helping with a 5k charity race, helping at the animal
shelter, or picking up trash in a park. Be sure to get parent permission before signing up for
any volunteer event. Write a one-page report about your volunteer experiences and what
you learned from volunteering. Be sure to include at least one picture of something you
helped with. If you need more ideas, ask your teachers or school counselor.
