Say vs Tell
decir
verbo to say.
algo) empleamos to tell y cuando no, el verbo to say. Vemoslo:

They said they would tell me as soon as they knew.

Ahora introducimos otros objetos personales (us, them, her, him etc.)

No digo ms. Pongamos

I say (that) its a good idea.

l dijo que se apuntara al curso. He said (that) he would sign up for the course.

Dijeron que se lo pensaran. They said (that) they would think about it.

We said (that) we thought it was a wonderful idea.

Dijeron que haran un esfuerzo. They said (that) they would make an effort.

I said what I thought.

She said what the cost would be in real terms.

Dijeron cules eran las perspectivas. They said what the prospects were.

Ins Garca
Ins Garca is back in Seville today, working at
her fathers law firm. However, her mind is still
on Paris, where she just spent four days with
Franois Monet. She had been to Paris once
before, but that was when she was a little girl.
She only remembered the Eiffel Tower and
Notre Dame from that visit. This time,
however, Franois took her to all the popular
sights and to several charming and secret
places.

The highlight of her visit was simply the hour

she spent in a rowboat with Franois in the
Boulogne Forest just outside of Paris. It was a
lovely day and they had a lovely time. Before
she left for Seville on Sunday, Franois told her
that he was falling in love. She didnt say
anything because she didnt want him to know
that she was absolutely crazy about him. On
the flight back, she made the decision to break
up with her boyfriend in Seville.

She decided that she would tell him

everything. It would be hard for him but it was
the best thing to do. They had been together
for four years, and for Ins, the relationship
had been fun but not passionate. She had
never met anyone like Franois, and she was
experiencing a feeling she had never known
before. She was convinced that she had finally
met Mr. Right.

1. Where is Ins today? 9. Where did Franois take her? her boyfriend in Seville?
2. Is this her first day back in Seville or was 10. What was the highlight of her visit? 19. Where did she make this decision?
she there during the weekend? 11. Where is the Boulogne Forest? 20. What did she decide she would tell him?
3. Where was she during the weekend? 12. How was the weather that day? 21. How did she think he would react?
4. How many days was she there? 13. What kind of time did they have together? 22. How long had they been together?

before? 16. What did she say to him? 24. Had she ever met anyone like Franois?
7. When did she go there? 17. What didnt she want him to know yet? 25. What kind of feeling was she experiencing?

Tell
decir
empleamos el verbo to tell.

Ella me dijo qu hacer. She told me what to do.

Me dijeron cmo funcionaba. They told me how it worked.

Ella les dijo qu hora era. She told them what time it was.

They told us when the play started.

He told them what was expected of them.

A continuacin propongo unos ejemplos.

Ir. I will go.

Ella me dijo que ira. She told me (that) she would go.

Veremos lo que podemos hacer. We will see what we can do.

They told us (that) they would see what they could do.

No podris venir. You wont be able to come.

Nos dijeron que no podramos ir. They told us (that) we wouldnt be able to go.

No te gustar la nueva situacin. You wont like the new situation.

I told him (that) he wouldnt like the new situation.

No entendern ni una sola palabra. They wont understand a word.

He told me (that) they wouldnt understand a word.
10
Expresiones con say y tell
decir

Hes always telling lies.

Me encantara que me dijera la verdad. I wish he would tell me the truth.

No s averiguar lo que quiere decir. I cant tell what he means.

Te cuento un chiste? Can I tell you a joke?

Te voy a desvelar un secreto. Im going to tell you a secret.

mientras to say hello es saludar.

Te lo puedes imaginar? Ni siquiera me salud! Can you believe it? He didnt even say hello to me!

Vamos a despedirnos de los tos! Lets say goodbye to your Uncle and Aunt!

No me digas! You dont say!

I feel like saying whats on my mind.

Has rezado? Have you said your prayers?

reaching a better understanding of English as spoken by native speakers. It is the key to English Paradise.
Dont forget that the Elision Fields are right before the Elysian Fields.

Sometimes when we slide words together, they can end up sounding like another word; in this case office (oficina).
Of course we are actually sliding the preposition off into the posessive adjective his. Learning to distinguish these
contracted words from real ones will greatly help your comprehension skills.

(my, your, his, her, our, their) cuando hablamos de una parte del sujeto.
Ejemplos:Get up and dont say a
Suena fatal.

el verbo que empleamos es to be y no to have.My legs are adjetivo personal (your) mira la explicacin del nmero 1.
tired.

ular. Suegro = father-in-law; suegra = mother-in-law; cuado = se encuentra esta persona. Cuando pagamos a un tercero para
brother-in-law; cuada = sister-in-law; nuera = daughter-in- que nos haga algo se usa la expresin to have + object + past
law; llerno = son-in-law. Tambin haba que saber cmo decir participle. Por ejemplo:I had my car repaired. (Me repararon

el coche.)
nunca se utiliza en la calle. La palabra correcta es short-sighted.
Existe la expresin to be short of time (andar corto de tiem-

Tres cosas. Primero, la expresin correcta es to have your eyes

Since tampoco es
tiempo, por ejemplo: since Monday, since 1999 etc.). Tercero, la
palabra while significa bastante tiempo o un rato largo.
