MATH 6B - 1st order quasi-linear PDEs and the method of change of vari-

ables, practice problems

1. Solve the following PDEs

(
3u x + 2u y = 0
(i)
u (x , 0) = sin x .
(
ux + uy = u
(ii)
u (x , 0) = cos x
(
ux + x uy = 0
(iii)
u (0, y ) = sin y
(
x u x + y u y = 2x y
(iv)
u = 2 or y = x 2 for x 6= 0.
(
x ux y uy + u = 1
(v)
u = 0 or y = x 2 , x > 0

2. Give the general solution of each part of the following 1st order PDEs

(i) u x + y u y = u .
(ii) x u x + y u y = u
(iii) (y + u )u x + u y = 1
(iv) u x + x u y + 3u = 2
(v) x u x y u y + y u = y .

3. Obtain the general solutions of the following PDEs using the given change of variables.

(i) y u x x + (x + y )u x y + x u y y = 0, = y x , = y 2 x 2.
(ii) u x x 2u y y u x + u y 2u = 0, = x +y, = y.
