Quiz 3 : One-way and Two-Way Slab

1. For the given simply supported one-way slab with initial depth B, design and
sketch the
a. main reinforcements of the slab parallel to length A (20 pts)
b. spacing of temperature bars perpendicular to main reinforcements at
any arbitrary length (10 pts)
Use fc = 21 MPa, db=12mm, fy=275 MPa.
(Note: if the initial slab thickness doesnt suffice, compute for the required
thickness of slab as prescribed by NSCP)

2. Analyze and design the two-way slab at the middle strip area parallel to length
B. Choose any of the column in the selection table and orient the column
I, such that its strength will be maximized in the design of the whole structural
assembly. Assume that the connection of the column to the slab is fixed. Also
assume that all criteria are met so that direct analysis / MDM can be used.

Use fc = 21 MPa, fy = 275 MPa, db=12mm. (40 pts)

I-column selection table

3. A two-span continuous one-way slab with clear spans of 4.2 meters is

supported by columns 300m wide. In addition to its dead weight, the slab
carries a liveload of 2.5kPa. Use fc=21 MPa and fy=275 MPa.

a. Determine the minimum required depth of slab (5 pts) (increment of

25mm)
b. Show that the NSCP/ACI coefficient method can be used to determine
the bending moments (5 pts)
c. Using the computed minimum depth of slab, calculate the spacing of
12mm diameter main reinforcing bars at the most critical section of
the slab (10 pts)
d. Find the spacing of 10mm diameter temperature bars (10 pts)
