Here at Parihaka Primary School, we place a high value on knowing how to look after ourselves, and
how to look after others. We recognise the value of whanaungatanga, and as a result have weaved
the concept of whanaungatanga into every term so that students are constantly building, rebuilding
and repairing their relationships. This is in line with our motto: Take Heart, and is a key part of
teaching and discipling the heart of every student. This decision was responsive as our school
community has experienced a high level of bullying over recent years. It is our hope that, by focusing
on building relationships, understanding each other and focusing intentionally on anti-bullying, that
we will eradicate this issue from our school community. It is our hope that the result of this will be a
respectful, cohesive, and inclusive school environment where all students are free and empowered
to be confident, connected, actively involved, lifelong learners. (MOE, 2007, p. 8). Our Term 1
focus is on building healthy relationships, maintaining these relationships, and beginning to stretch
and grow our muscles. Building on these, our Term 2 focus is on identifying risks, maintaining
relationships and improving fine and gross motor skills. Building on the work so far regarding
relationships, our Term 3 focus is looking after ourselves and what makes us different as individuals.
To top it all off, our Term 4 focus is ensuring that students know the changes their body is going
through so they care equipped and prepared to deal with these changes. We also have a strong
focus on water safety and fire safety units which are directly applicable to that time of the year.
By having a strong focus on whanaungatanga (relationships) in every term, we are intentionally
responding to the New Zealand Curriculum which states:
Students learn best when they enjoy positive relationships with their fellow students and
teachers, and when they are able to be active, visible members of the learning community.
(MOE, 2007, p. 34)
Please note - Achievement Objectives are focused at level 3 and can be located in full in the New
Zealand Curriculum[NZC] (2007) document. In each alpha-numeric combination listed in the above
curriculum plan, the number refers to the column of the Achievement Objective in the NZC and the
letter refers to the place it is located in that column. For example C3 would be under relationships
with other people and would focus on Identity, sensitivity, and respect.

(NB: There was nothing written here before Peer Critique, AOs have also been added and have been
coloured white to reflect this).
