OBJECTIVE
- Determine the grain size distribution of the soil .
- To classify the soil .

EQUIPMENT S
1- Mechanical sieve shaker
2- Different size of sieves
3- Balance
4- Container

Procedure
- we prepare the sample of soil and take its weight . ( 660 g )
- we sorted the sieves in the shaker from largest to smallest
- we added the sample on the first sieve then cover it , and started the
shaker for 10 minutes .

- we put the empty container on the balance and reset it to zero

- we took each sieve and put the soil retained in the container to get the
mass retained on each sieve.

Calculation

- Since the percent passing on sieve #4 ( 82 % ) > 50%

the sample is sand soil .
Cu = D60/D10 = 2.5 / .39 = 6.41 .
Cc= D30/D10*D60 = .95/ 2.5*.39 = .925 .
- Since the Cu > 6 well Cu = 6.41
- Cc range for well graded 1< Cc <3 Cc = .925 .
. the sample is poor-well graded . ( SP - SW)
- Mass loss = 660-679/660 = -.028 < 2% .. will be discussed in the
conclusion
- Error percent = 679 - 660 / 660 = 2.8 %

STANDARD REFERANCE
- ASTM D422 .
Conclusion

- The type of the soil is Sand and its poor-well graded .

- The Mass loss was a negative value since there was no accuracy when
taking the weight from the balance for each sieve and the value should be
less than 2% .

- the sample was wet and its going to stuck in the sieve there was a
percent of error
