ALlF ALLAH

With A- ALLAH my heart is bright red

Of B- alphabet I've never ever heard
As I tried at letter B, I was dumbfound
Letter Alif gave me pleasure unbound
E or G(E.' e)'s difference, I've no need
ALlF adequate enough to be my guide
Bullah! Alif's attributes eternally abide
With these hearts get cleans'd, turn mild
(Sufis never differ between t or t. t is UdC w/j and t is .uJ/~. This is Bullah
Shah's favourite theme which appears repeatedly in his Kalaam).

Kafi No. 2
Inayat Sain- My Murshid, My Mentor

Love! In coming to us why you are so late

What thought in your mind ye contemplate
Of pain and pleasure, any sense I have lost
All the coiffeur, cosmetics on fire I have put
My bed also has turned into fire-bearing set
Love! In coming to us why you are so late

I've heard points full of wisdom and thought

I feel all my honour and respect I must quit
Like a cuckoo in separation cry I entire night
Even then you seem to stay of me idifferent
Love! In coming to us why you are so late

Deer-skin, human skulls in my neck I did put

Beggar of y'r glimpse wander I, in movement
Gypsy is what they call, actual name I forgot
Each of my body part now inundated in dust
Love! In coming to us why you are so late

When love's herald called Azzan from pulpit

One cant help rushin' to it, this much's must
Praying bow'd I down, so much did prostrate
My forehead too into prayer-niche did convert
Love! In coming to us why you are so late
Love-town's customs are entirely so different
Love's eyes full with blood keep him content
I got trapped in the net, solely my own fault
I took it jokingly light, got slaughtered at last
Love! In coming to us why you are so late

Separation-pain never low, it stays constant

Whoever suffers it, he alone knows its taste
At home sure they scold, outsiders too berate
Ever since in love, pain has become my mate
Love! In coming to us why you are so late

Starling bird in tears, by gardener was caught

Separation pain's iron-grip had lent it no rest
Love decimates; world laughin' stock did treat
Who'll come to assist, as Mentor to resuscitate
Love! In coming to us why you are so late

Bullah! Love for Beloved never ye disconnect

Many a beauty turned gala dressed, buoyant
As soon Shah Inayat Sain himself did manifest
One couldn't help, my heart for him I had lost
Love! In coming to us why you are so late

Kafi No. 3
Now I'm in Love

What do I do now, I am Love-smitten

Neither living can I nor death I attain
Love! Our wail and lament you listen
No rest or peace in day or night I gain
Sans love, not a moment I can sustain
What do I do now, I am Love-smitten
Neither living can I nor death I attain

Separation's fire, in it we constant burn

My love -burn, can me assist someone
My eyes cant get cool sans love's vision
What do I do now, I am Love-smitten
Neither living can I nor death I attain

Bullah! I am caught with heavy burden

Give us help, find for us some medicine
How long I carry on suffering this pain
What do I do now, I am Love-smitten
Neither living can I nor death I attain

Annihilation in Love

(Love stages) Now I am completely lost

Place where I'm lost is called love-State
Me- tryin' hard to reform my affairs' state
Tough task; no head, tail I could work out
'Self' I quit then realized my own estimate
I became knower, matters turned straight
(Headgear off) Disgrace at home did start
Wherefrom then justice or care I'll expect
Bullah! In both worlds beloved is manifest
Save him, no one else appears in sight

Kafi No. 5
Countenance of the Prince

Bless me with your sweet union, my dear!

Initially you had embraced me, so sincere
I request; in y'r duty (loyalty), don't waver
On path; dacoits, jungle, calamities hinder
Hungry cheetahs- me as a morsel desire
Y'r way; vast floods, thorns, many disaster
Heart's boat shivers, help me cross over
WorShip God sincere, prayer He'll answer
To Bullah, love! lift veil, of face do exposure

Those in our neighboured, they left

Lord! What should we do after that?

They've got up, now they won't rest

Ready to travel, they're about to quit
Lord! What should we do after that?

7
Fire flames burn, flare up in our chest
Separation-fire rages upward, highest
Lord! What should we do after that?

Bullah! Sans beloved, our sweetheart

Bereft of this-n-that world, so we exist
Lord! What should we do after that?

Darling! Embrace us, why with us you quarrel

In sleep nothing seen, beloved I found in vigil
Darling! Embrace us, why with us you quarrel

'Get up on my order'; hang'd Shams in reprisal

Dispelled I into lull, lunatic lover earned as title
Darling! Embrace us, why with us you quarrel

Between ye-n-me no distance, why hide ye still

Buffalos back, Ranjha didn't, parting prov'd fatal
Darling! Embrace us, why with us you quarrel

Love shows such spectacle, Yousuf put into well

Lifted veil, Zulikha of Egypt earned bad label
Darling! Embrace us, why with us you quarrel

'Expose on me Lord'; Musa on Sinai had a fall

'Ye will never see me'; reprimand he earned tall
Darling! Embrace us, why with us you quarrel

Love turned me a lunatic, an orphan incapable

Bullah! Inayat darling met, love in heart did settle
Darling! Embrace us, why with us you quarrel

There's a certain Ranjha I'm looking for

'Be it, it became' so started my amour

My love not clandestine, hidden never
There's a certain Ranjha I'm looking for

With buffalos- shepherd he does loiter

Keeps me off jungle, lets me not near
There's a certain Ranjha I'm looking for

One like my Ranjha, I see none other

Turn'd he only after much I did implore
There's a certain Ranjha I'm looking for

Wheat-skin'd they, same is eye-colour

Befits red scarf, adds to their glamour
There's a certain Ranjha I'm looking for

Betw'n Ahad-n-Ahmad, what can I utter

Bullah! M's little letter, secret does bear
There's a certain Ranjha I'm looking for

Read letter A; of rest be exempt

From A emerged one, two count
Thousands, millions from it erupt
Then grew numbers sans count

Subtlety of A is a distinct secret

Read letter A; of rest be exempt

Why read bundle-books or script

Earn ye burden on head so great
Look of executioner ye do exhibit

Ahead lies a journey so difficult

Read letter A; of rest be exempt

Ye memorize Quran; Hafiz's trait

It ye recite, y'r tongue gets fluent
Then rich food, eatables ye covet

Door-to-door ye go pillar to post

Read letter A; of rest be exempt

Bullah! banyan tree seed I'd plant

Oneday into tall tree it'd manifest
Later, natural death it'd decimate

Seed left behind, (cycle) complete

Read letter A; of rest be exempt

Kafi No. 12

The truth lies in just one single point

Read one point, other affairs ye quit
Notes of unbelief do not contemplate
Keep off from hell or grave's torment
Of odd, ill thoughts, cleanse y'r heart

Only on that point entire issues rest

The truth lies in just one single point

Ye just rubbing the head on the mat

Forehead sign; ye prostrate frequent
Ye utter Kalmah, then act fraudulent
In heart, purity of thought still in want
Can the truth remain for long secret?
The truth lies in just one single point

Makkah pilgrims return, Haji title get

Some pride in takin' blue sufi garment
Exchange Haj reward; for bread covet
Who'll like such a shameless conduct
Can the truth remain for long secret?
The truth lies in just one single point

Some go to jungle, pray in the desert

Or take a grain, in mosque corner put
Futile; bodies they torment-n-exhaust
Like dead, fatigued at home they rest

In forced hunger-pray, life do deplete

The truth lies in just one single point

Hold Mentor's hand, serve destitute

Intoxicated in service, be indifferent
Be sans desire, put y'r heart content
Cleanse heart deep, let it remain lit

Bullah! Straight talk never in retreat

Can the truth remain for long secret?

Times have changed, it's a different world
Beloved's subtleties only now I understand

Crows cut falcons, sparrows hit eagles bad

Arabian horses find food from junk mound
(Some versions: Arabian horses get whipped like
vagabond)
Donkeys occupy meadows, turn grass lord
There's no love lost among family or friend
Be they uncles, other members of household
Even there's no unity between son and dad
Daughters distanced from mothers; so sad
Those who speak truth get treat harsh, hard
Those who tell lies are respected, honoured
Noble ones of the past earn insult-n-offend
Newly rich, they are the masters and lord
Brown-bearers (Sikh warriors) power hold
Earlier rulers beg (Durranis); sans cash hard
Bullah! All this came by Lord's command
None can ever change this condition or avoid

Times have changed, it's a different world

Beloved's subtleties only now I understand

Mom and Dad (Adam and Eve)'s a big favour

See now we are reapin' it and we must endure

Mom, Dad stole grain; in child's habit to recur

Even today for petty gain (grain), fights occur
We got the trouble because they usurped there

Mom and Dad (Adam and Eve)'s a big favour

See now we are reapin' it and we must endure

If steals Khaira, punished is J uma; so unfair

Bullah! Parrots out from garden, owls linger

Mom and Dad (Adam and Eve)'s a big favour

See now we are reapin' it and we must endure

Come, see me dear! Of my condition
inquire
My body is overwhelmed in hardships
severe
My callous slumber, ye gone, I stay
unaware
In desert robb' d I; pain, wild animals devour
Mulla, Kazi tell religion, yet use faith unfair
They trick the public, rope them in their snare
Religion-rituals tie to our feet they- so heavier
Love shuns caste, faith; from Sharia does
differ
In futile play I'm lost, love lives across the
river
Mentor! Delay not succour, my boat does
waver
Bullah! You'll see love; hold heart, with valour
Love is near, so clear, ye oblivious at noon
hour

His looks resembl' d those of
shepherdman

Rolling in animal-dung unnoticed is

Will one do justice, about God in
oblivion?
About the actual truth, really knows no

Strange; love has an inverse course

Ayub- patient full devotion did

express
See how sweetheart showed his
'grace'
His veins filled with worms, in
excess
Mighty ones' power, can one
suppress

Zakaria to Prophethood he got

access
When love's drum played
mellifluous
On head he got a sharp saw
merciless
What a loss, what a shock
disastrous

16
Strange; love has an inverse course

In love's arena Yahya had a

glimpse
Love's dagger in his chest did
pierce
God granted him vision so gracious
He rolled in blood, dagger
malicious

He winked eye; indicat'd accordance

Mansur took the love-drink's chalice
On gallows, saw love sans
hindrance
Love at its peak, no one could
surpass

When Suleman indulged in

romance
His blessed ring he had to bear loss
Fairies no more by his throne to
pass
For low-caste he enter'd their
service

Bullah! It's better you adopt silence

No need to bluff or pose as
fearless
Nothing doing here; this ye
embrace
Quit all vainglory, give it a distance
Strange; love has an inverse

Kirshan played the lute in a strange
tone

My shepherd Ranjha, lute that you

own
All enjoy; your melody is sweetest
one
Your waves with our fibre so
intertwine
Our tunes with yours so matchfully
join
Lute-player! they name you magic-
man
Your melodies are many, appealing
one
Ye are not visible, by our sight not
seen
Yet y' r games are great, beguiling
one

Lute everyone can play or one can

listen
Its true secret hardly can fathom
everyone
If someone understands melodies
divine
He is bound to get lost in this lute's
tone
22
I have heard this lute's loud
lamentation
I cry like peacock; body-n-heart in
burn
I noticed this rise and fall in its intonation
Entire act based on one tone
(Kunfayakun)

This lute's lyric not so simple; a long one

Whoever went after it, got
comprehension
This lute's lines (wires) are always green
Its attributes aren't ordinary; indeed
divine

This lute has few pores; five or even

seven
Trill from the pores plays with
automation
One tone (breath) in these is prominent
one
By that single one, we have lost our
brain

Bullah! Promis'd creditors are right

therein
Friends are at the door, to you now
beckon
With Kalmah, keep affinity, y'r interaction
Prophet to vouchsafe for ye; shun
concern

In y'r love, I dance at Thayya Thayya
beat

From y'r love's portion I remained

exempt
It's a loss as ifhammers on my head
burst
Love's stroke, everywhere cries
reverberate
In y'r love, I dance at Thayya Thayya
beat

Of this love, Mom! Do not, me ye

prevent
Now who'll bring to shore this sailing
boat
My sense was lost that I joined sailor
caste
In y'r love, I dance at Thayya Thayya
beat
23
In love's jungle, now sings peacock
sweet
To me is like Ka'ba focus- my sweetheart
Wound'd me; never asks I'm in what
state
In y'r love, I dance at Thayya Thayya
beat

Bullah! Let us move to Shah Inayat's gate

Whose love led us wear green, red
garment
In dance heel I hit, destination there I'd
get
In y'r love, I dance at Thayya Thayya beat

Though intimacy yet one can not trust
One fears, beloved can turn indifferent

In fire flames Prophet Ibrahim was put

Coal-fire at ironsmith Suleman did
heat
In the seas; Yunus a fish him did
ingest
Yusufwas sold in the Egyptian market
Though intimacy yet one can not trust
One fears, beloved can turn indifferent

A saw Zakariah' s head into two did cut

Ayub's body eaten by worms; got infect
San'an's neck- Christian girdle was put
Shams Tabriz was skinned, body' d
roast
Though intimacy yet one can not trust
One fears, beloved can turn indifferent

A light from dearest Apostle did erupt

Hussain- thus named child of Prophet
His rock; archangel did roll-n-oscillate
Later cut at Kerbala; many days thirst
Though intimacy yet one can not trust
One fears, beloved can turn
indifferent
24
By a tree refuge when Zakariah
sought
Anger felt; disapproved his hiding act
A saw mercilessly his head into two
cut
Even the tree too, into two had to
split
Though intimacy yet one can not
trust
One fears, beloved can turn
indifferent

Yahya was close friend from the

outset
He engaged in love, selfless so
intimate
Rigorously Sharee' at he did
propagate
Killed at queen's order; head on
plate
Though intimacy yet one can not
trust
One fears, beloved can turn
indifferent

Bullah! Now I know well sweetheart

In any form I recognize; so manifest
He comes, how goes; not so difficult
Him- now I can never forget at least
Though intimacy yet one can not
trust
One fears, beloved can turn
indifferent

In ears they bear fish-shaped

All this make up, shine decor served none
Love had no effect, they forgot home

Hair plaited, braided long tress in fashion
Applied perfume, in mouth betel-leaf pan
Teeth clean with Missi (powder) too

Friends filled buckets each one on her turn

Bullah! Go ahead if beloved does beckon

So path to ye be familiar, to ye be known

Love not seen, letter I write at evenin' hour
My pavilion desolate, spendin' night severe

On paper I pour my pain, eyes full of tear

Separation kills, my heart [ will put on fire
I asked clair-voyant, pundit-n-fortune-teller
No fault in their study; stars are sans favour

It ditched me; inimical is my own slumber

Sleep lets not love come in my dream
ever

The more I weep, my sorrows grow further

Someone cast spell, eyes are left sans
water

In every organ erupts pain of that stranger

Hard-hearted, checks my arm, flees
further

Clairvoyant! Tell the truth, do this favour

If my luck feeble, say it clear, don't waver

No lamp no lantern there, it is dark cloister

By arms drag; no friend, mate as eo
traveler

In love as beggar, now can't disengage

ever
In my neck hangs love's chain multi-layer

Both eyes gone, now I realize pinch severe

Inayat Qadri left, I ife turns to tale of horror

Mendicant's robe is a solace, love its tailor

In sound sleep is darling, in vigil poor lover

Flower basket in hand I hawk-n-seek trader

I knock door to door, world is transient Fair

Through veil amorous glance Ye do spill

First You shaped the sweetheart so well

Now command to worship; Shariah will
You come Yourself to see the spectacle
You appear in Laila and glances Y e

Shams Tabrizi skinned, an act so brutal

Mansur to gallows; into pieces they kill
Zakaria; saw cuts head into halves

Kun (be) had Fayakoon (done); Y'r will

From naught appeared the world mortal

Yet I'm keen (for love) to cross

I've no acquaintance with any
sailor
It suits not quarrel with'em or
bicker
In sweetheart's longing burn I ever
In skies I let crow fly as my courier

Near the banks of the Chinab

river
Whirlpool in swing, spins
speedier
Drowned in its water many a
diver
IfI'm to cry, entire world will hear
In sweetheart's longing burn I
ever
In skies I let crow fly as my
courier

Chinab's tributaries too bear

danger
Many divers plunge in its deep

My love on the other side went
over
Alone, unattended, only I'm left
here
In sweetheart's longing burn I ever
In skies I let crow fly as my courier Page

I look his path, waiting for my amour
Beloved's love afflicted me so

If I cry I'll be lost, I'll remain no more

Chinab side are jungles in big

In jungles roam bloody lions and tiger
God! unite me with my belov'd

In this thought, all time on this I
ponder
In sweetheart's longing burn I ever
In skies I let crow fly as my courier

It is mid-night, now set down the

star
Some set, others ready for
departure
I reached river bank, quit my

Now to cross over, wait Ion the
shore
In sweetheart's longing burn I ever
In skies I let crow fly as my courier

I know not swim, nor I'm sailor, diver

I have no anchor, any chord or the
oar
Sans support here, whirlpool's

I'm crying, at luck lines in hand I
stare
In sweetheart's longing burn I ever
In skies I let crow fly as my courier

Bullah! If love in my house will enter

Thus meet him, auspicious I'll

Known world over why flee from lover
In my scarf hide, yet secret do not share
Mid-road me gripped, hanged I linger
I am caught; my life is now in the snare

Insider, come out! Y'r arm I catch near

Apparently ye hide yet in me ye dweller
Wounded like Zulekha, my chest in tear
I am caught; my life is now in the snare

Tales I share he would ignore; sans care

I cry constant, remorsefully I sigh over
Instead of , get tin' I 'give'; so his favour
I am caught; my life is now in the snare

Agitate I within, wish to tell what I cover

Truth takes to gallows, lies can life spare
Sensitive word utter, then can't it recover
I am caught; my life is now in the snare

Angels as courier; y'r proximity I endear

I sleep not ye awake, I sleep ye in slumber
Whoever loves ye, no comfort can acquire
I am caught; my life is now in the snare

I'm disgrac' d, few others earned dishonour

A distant glimpse then ye skip here-n-there
In hidin', fleein' what sort of ye feel honour
I am caught; my life is now in the snare
