Color Systems
Since there are over 9 million colors known to exist, various color systems are
used to help bring order to them and to provide a method of seeing
relationships between colors.

Two types of Color Systems

Munsell Color System
Prang System
The Munsell Color Tree and Prang systems are two examples of systems used by
artists and designers.

Prang Color System

Prang Color (Also Known as Artists Color System) was introduced by the
American lithographer Louis Prang.

It is a commonly used mechanical

arrangement that uses the twelve
basic hues. The primary hues (red,
yellow and blue) are placed at equal
distance, in a circle or wheel. The
secondary colors are placed halfway
between the primary colors and the
intermediate colors, placed
between primary and secondary
colors, as appropriate.

It was the first workable system to reproduce color in print.

Munsell Color System

The Munsell Color System was
devised by Albert Henry Munsell, an
American Artist. Munsell desired to
create a "rational way to describe
color" that would use clear decimal
notation instead of a lot of color
names that he considered "foolish"
and "misleading." It also aims in
arranging warm and cool colors
equilaterally on the both sides of the color wheel.

Munsell modeled his system as an orb around whose equator runs a band of
colors. The axis of the orb is a scale of
neutral gray values with white as the
north pole and black as the south pole.

Extending horizontally from the axis at

each gray value is a gradation of color
progressing from neutral gray to full
saturation.

With these three defining aspects, any of

thousands of colors could be fully described. Munsell named these aspects, or
qualities, (Properties of Color)

Chroma.

Yet this system omits yellow-orange and red-orange from its chart. This system
uses Standard and Intermediate colors in place of Primary, Secondary, and
Tertiary colors. It is useful in purpose of decorating.
