THE CHIVALROUS IDEAL AND A PORTRAIT OF A WARRIOR-KING

Summary
The Romance of Alexander the Great, together with the Romance of Troy, was one
of the most popular novels in medieval Serbia. It is considered that this novel appeared
in Serbia at the end of the XIII/beginning of the XIV century and that it was translated
from one of the Greek medieval versions of the mentioned work. However, it has been
established that the Romance of Alexander the Great has come down to us from maritime
parts of Serbian medieval state, which have been exposed to the strong influence of the
western culture. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to ascertain to what extent the

western influences can be found in the Romance itself and to what extent the work is a
translation from the Greek version of the text.
The popularity of the Romance and its influence on the works of Serbian archbishop
Danilo II - the famous Danilov zbornik - as well as on the works of his successors, must
be ascribed to the character of Alexander the Great, a ruler who conquered almost the
entire antique world. During the course of time the story of Alexander the Great underwent
serious changes and the main character, the Macedonian ruler and the story of his deeds,
became a story of a conquering Christian hero.
The Romance of Alexander the Great corresponded with the literary trends and genres
of the XIV century Serbian literature. The portrayal of the main character also corresponded
with the images of the rulers of that time from the Nemanji dynasty (mainly kings Milutin,
Stefan Deanski and Stefan Duan), who were all marked (like Alexander himself) as
warrior-kings, conquering heroes. The image of a warrior-king was also closely related to
the model of medieval gentleman, in which one can recognize western influences, for
they were both expected to be courageous, merciful, just and protectors of Christianity.
Accordingly, five points related to the aforementioned models can be analized:
1. Alexander as a warrior-king and a gentleman
2. Knight as a protector of Christianity
3. Warrior insignia
4. Relation towards women
5. Relation towards death
All of these points tend to show the christianized Alexander, his behaviour as a
ruler, but also as a medieval knight (which can be seen in the episodes of tournaments and
duels in which Alexander takes part against the other knights), his care for Christianity
and holy places as well as the importance of warrior insignia (spear, sword, shield and
helmet), which were considered holy and sacred. Of special importance are the parallels
and comparisons that can be found in the vitae of Serbian medieval kings, Danilov zbornik
and the works which followed, related to Alexander the Great (starting from king Milutin)
and the episodes from the Romance itself. However, in order to establish the specificity
and uniqueness of the Serbian version of the Romance, a more detailed comparison of
Serbian and Greek, as well as western versions of the novel must be carried out. Some
future research of the Romance will aim to answer these questions.

KARLOVCI DEMOGRAPHIC AND ECONOMIC STRUCTURE

Among the most important features of the history of Southeast and Central Europe
from the end of the XIV to the end of the XVI century were intense demographic changes.
Researching its causes, courses and consequences is prerequisite for consideration of the
continuity between the medieval and the early modern societies and cultures. This paper,
above all, should highlight the existing gap in the contemporary demographic studies
of the Southeast European early modern history, showing that in the second half of the
sixteenth century, according to the Ottoman fiscal records, the largest agrarian settlement
inhabited by the peasants of Serbian origin Karlovci (modern day: Sremski Karlovci),
were placed outside the borders of medieval Serbian Despotate. This curiosity confirms a
well known fact that the Ottoman military expansion and their peacetime fiscal strategy,
from XIV to XVI century, provoked large-scale migration waves, thus significantly and
permanently reshaping the demographic and socio-economic structure of the Southeast
European societies.
In the first section of this paper are presented basic demographic data from the
Ottoman fiscal books related to the Christian population inhabiting former territories

of medieval Serbian Despotate (Ottoman sanjaks of Kruevac, Vuitrn, Smederevo and

Prizren) as well as the Sanjak of Syrmia. Comparison of the data for ten largest Christian
settlements in each of the five aforesaid Ottoman administrative units shows that Karlovci
were the largest Christian settlement in the Sanjak of Syrmia, with a population of about
three to ten times larger then in the best populated Christian settlements in Sanjaks of
Kruevac (Bukovica), Vuitrn (Pritina), Prizren (Prizren) and Smederevo (Miloevac).
According to the census of 1546, there were noted 466 fiscal houses (should not be confused
with households) and 86 widows in Karlovci, but demographic values were at their peak
around 1552/53, when Ottoman officials noted 691 fiscal houses and 85 widows. During
the last few decades of the XVI century there was a decline in population.
The second section of the paper considers the structure of the male personal names
that Ottoman officials registered at Karlovci during the second half of the XVI century.
Even though this kind of analysis could give approximate values only, it seems obvious that
Karlovci represented a mixed settlement in terms of ethnic origin and confessional structure
of its population. The Hungarian and Slavic inhabitants of the non-Orthodox denomination
(they were mostly Calvinists) were a minority of about 1020% of the total population.
The largest number of the registered householders (about 8090%) or they fathers, had
personal names of Slavic origin (names with the roots: Vuk-, Drag-, Mil-, Rad- and others)
as well as specific forms of the Christian names, that are quite frequently encountered in
the Ottoman surveys of Sanjaks of Kruevac, Vuitrn, Prizren and Smederevo (e.g. Jovan
John, but also: im Joachim, Kostadin Constantine, Kuzma Cosmas, Lazar Lazarus,
Mihajlo Michael, Pantelija Pantaleon, Prokopije Procopius, Trifun Triphon). In
the XVI century most of these names are rarely noted or not recorded at all among the
Hungarians or non-Orthodox Slavic population in the Sanjaks of Poega and Pakrac in
modern day Croatia. Root causes for such density of agrarian population in Karlovci cannot
be completely determined. One of the key factors surely was an advantageous geographic
position of Karlovci on the Danube riverside, encircled to the south by hills suitable for
growing grapes. It was the enormous grape production (about 30% of total production in
Sanjak of Syrmia) that enabled this town to take one of the leading positions among the
most profitable fiscal units in Sanjak of Syrmia. As a direct consequence, almost all timar-
forming taxes from Karlovci became part of imperial hass. This paper concludes with the
spreadsheets showing the structure of the timar-forming taxes in Karlovci.

SERBIAN MONKHOOD IN THE 19th AND THE FIRST DECADE

OF THE 20th CENTURY

Summary
Monasteries under the jurisdiction of Patriarchate of Pe began to decline at the end
of the 17th and in the first half of the 18th century. The reasons were: popular uprisings,
wars, migrations and the indifference of the Greek bishop. Violation of monastic vows and
serving more the national idea than the religion, was a product of historical circumstances,
beginning with the participation of monks in the struggle against the Turks, and progressing
in the 19th century with their involvment in the political struggle. Monastery reforms,
which began to carry out in the Metropolitanate of Karlovci during the 18th century and
in the Metropolitanate of Belgrade in the 19th century, advanced slowly and against great
resistance of the monks. The monks were gradually getting more independent. Their
educational level was low as well as their internal discipline. Property of monasteries,
despite a series of reorganizations and trying's to save and improve it, continued to decline.
Nevertheless, it did not influenece local theological thinkers and important theological
works. By the early 20th century, there were no schools for special education of monks.
The reasons for the declining of monasticism some found in the opening of secular and
theological schools. Only monks in the monasteries could accustom to the strict monastic
life and heavy physical work and learn how to run a household. Spiritual teachers were
the key persons in forming the monks in monasteries, but such teachers were rare. Secular
ideas that penetrated gradually in the society and secular life that provided increased
opportunities for people, contributed to the decline of interest in monasticism. People
entered the monkhood reluctantly and usually with family opposition. Contemporaries
testified that the motives for monastic life were not every time devotional. Novices often
went in monasteries, but not because of hopes for serving Christ, or because of the relief of
all world temptations (celibacy, poverty and obedience), spiritual and physical loneliness.
Reasons were more worldly, like finding bread without the work. The monkish life was
interesting also to those who intended to build a church career, like future bishops. They
were not staying in monasteries for long. After schooling they took over the episcopal
chairs. Some of them were not ready and mature enough to lead the Church, but too
desirous of comfortable life and power. In the late 19th century dissatisfaction with the
state of monasticism was so big that there were opinions, even among leading politicians,
that monasteries were outdated and needed to be closed.

MIROSLAV SPALAJKOVI IN THE FRIEDJUNG PROCESS

Summary
At the end of the Annexation crisis, in March 1909, Heinrich Friedjung, a Viennese
historian, published an article in which he indicated some subversive activities of Serbia
within South Slavic territories of the Habsburg Monarchy. The article, instigated by
Aehrental, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, marked Miroslav Spalajkovi, Secretary General
of the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as a person who participated in the financing of
the Croat-Serb opposition coalition. The leaders of the coalition filed a libel lawsuit against
Friedjung and there was a trial in Vienna in December 1909. In the trial, there were some
witnesses from Serbia who stated that documents of the Austro-Hungarian diplomacy, on
which Friedjung based his article, were forgeries, after which the defendant himself admitted
that they had lost probative value. Spalajkovi also testified and, despite Friedjungs
fierce defense based on the provocation of hasty responses, significantly contributed to
such outcome of the process. At the end of next year, the leader of the Czech opposition
Tom Masaryk launched a campaign against Aehrental in the Delegations, trying to
prove that the officials of Habsburg diplomacy were also involved in the falsification of
the documents. At the same time, Serbian government in Belgrade filed a lawsuit against
Vasi, the counterfeiter. Spalajkovis support of Masaryks campaign brought him into
conflict with Jnos Forgch, the Austro-Hungarian minister in Serbia, which ended up in
ceasing all communication between them, and then removing them both from Belgrade. All
these events further strained relations between Austria-Hungary and Serbia, culminating
in the July Crisis of 1914.

Summary
The leaders of the Yugoslav communists tried to secure a leading position in the
Balkans during the war. Macedonian territory, as a traditional scene of the conflict of
interest among the Balkan countries, had a special significance for the Yugoslav, as well as
for the Greek and Bulgarian side. Soviet Union - as a victorious great power of the Second
World War, the ideological patron of the communist movement and the country that had
special interests in the Balkans - tried to have a decisive influence on the regulation of the
Macedonian question. Its attitude gradually affected the Yugoslav attitudes which ranged
from the radical demands for full annexation of Macedonia, through signing of peace
and friendship treaty with Bulgaria, to the final border delimitation among Yugoslavia,
Greece and Bulgaria, when Macedonia was divided among these three countries. At the
same time, Soviet policy strove to calm relations with Bulgaria as a member of the Eastern
Bloc, while the policy towards Greece was much harsher since the Soviets regarded Greece
as an exponent of British policy in the Balkans. Final solution of the territorial dispute
formally resolved Macedonian question regarding territory, but opened a new dimension
of Cold War antagonisms related to the Yugoslav role in the Greek Civil War. Basically,
the Macedonian issue was the subject of a dispute between Yugoslavia and Greece during
the entire second half of the XX century.

Register of the clergy in the Diocese of Buda in 1771/1772.

Summary
After the Great Migration of the Serbs in 1690, at the time of the Patriarch Arsenije
III Crnojevi, the Diocese of Buda became one of seven dioceses of newly established
Metropolitanate of Karlovci. Much earlier than in other parts of the Habsburg Monarchy,
Serbian population in this diocese acquired bourgeois elements, due to their strong
community of tradesmen and craftsmen in Buda and Szentendre municipalities. Many
times, they criticized even the highest church authorities. After the Empress Maria Theresa
executed the reduction of the clergy, the number of priests was significantly reduced in
all parishes. This source shows the strength of Serbian houses and priests in the Diocese
of Buda in 1771/1772, just after this reduction. The document is filed in the Manuscript
Department of Matica Srpska in Novi Sad under number M 4.175.
