DMT 121 Electronics Devices [Peranti Elektronik]

1) With aid of diagrams, explain the differences between a conductor, an insulator

and a semiconductor in terms of energy level diagrams.

2) Sketch the characteristics of IV curve graphs for an ideal, practical & complete
model of a diode.

3) By using a complete diode model where rd = 0.5k & Rr = 0.1M, based on the
circuit in Figure 1, calculate;

Figure 1

a) the diode forward current, ID

b) the voltage across resistor, VR

c) Assuming the diode is reverse-biasing, calculate the voltage across resistor, V R and
the diode reverse current, IR

4) Based on the circuit in Figure 2, calculate;

1
Figure 2

a) the ratio of Nsecondary & Nprimary, n.

[2 marks]

b) the secondary voltage, Vsec.

[2 marks]

c) the peak output voltage, Vp(out).

[2 marks]

d) the Peak Inverse Voltage (PIV).

[2 marks]

e) Assuming the diode is in forward bias, sketch the output voltage, Vp(out).

5) Based on Figure 3, the transformer ratio = 0.4. Calculate:

Figure 3

a) Vp(sec)

b) Vp(out)

c) PIV

d) Sketch the waveform for VP (sec) and VP (out)

Appendix

PIV = Vp(sec)

Vp(out) = Vp(sec) 1.4

PIV = Vp(sec) + 0.7
