Field Work Assignment

Invitations to Learn:
Date:___Oct 25_______________ Where was the invitation placed? ____St. John CDC________________

Briefly describe the invitation or submit a photograph of the invitation before the children have
interacted with it:
The children will have an opportunity to create two simple apple recipes using provided materials and
pictorial instructions. One is a type of individual apple pie, the other is an apple, cheese and cracker
placed together and melted in the oven with spices measured and poured over it.

I selected this as an invitation in response to

The children liking my first invitation so much. They kept asking to eat the apples that were covered in
paint, and I told them they could not, so now they can eat the apples.

This is how I think the children might use it.

I think they will use it to create the apple recipes I have laid out.

If my hypothesis is right and the children did this, I would.

Encourage them in following this route by prompting them to look ahead at what they will need next.

Briefly describe how learning goals could be met through the childs experience:
Social and Emotional- shared ingredients/shared materials

Scientific thought/discovery- learning about baking and basic chemistry changes- The apples
went into the oven hard, they came out soft.

Mathematical concepts- measuring things, counting how many apples we add

Creativity- How can they make the recipe their own? Will they follow the recipe or not?

Language and Literacy- Following the picture recipe laid out for them.

Physical- rolling out pastry

Spiritual- Who made the apples grow? Who gave us food to make?

What Open-ended question would you ask to extend the activity and help the children gain knowledge
and experience? List at least 3.
1. What do you think will happen to these recipes when we bake them?

2. Why do we follow recipes?

3. Why do we measure what we add to the recipe?

After using the invitation:

My reaction to how the children used it..

Reflection about the invitation: (how did it go, changes made, etc)
