Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Cooking With Science

Content Area: Science/Math
Grade Level(s) 3rd Grade

Content Standard Addressed:

S1CS3.-Students will use tools and instruments for observing, measuring, and manipulating
objects in scientific activities.
MCC4.MD.1- Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of
units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec.
a. Understand the relationship between gallons, cups,
quarts, and pints
MCC3.NF.1-Understand a fraction as the quantity formed by 1 part when a
whole is partitioned into b equal parts (unit fraction).

Technology Standard Addressed:

1- Empowered Learner- Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing and demonstrate
competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences. Students will use technology to seek
feedback that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.

Selected Technology Tool: Inspiration

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): For students with physical impairments, I would have adaptive utensils
ready for use. iPad will be available when children need more step-by-step guidance, looking at videos, and
utilizing the internet to look at interesting recipes. In addition, videos will be introduced. Headphones and
closed cation will be available to student with hearing impairments.

Engagement: To introduce the subject of cooking, the students familiarize themselves with utensils at the
sensory table to work on their fine-motor skills. The students will also have a chance to explore liquid and
solid substances
Representation: The students will have multiple representations of cooking and science 101. A video will
show how children can cook with adult supervision, read books about cooking and cooking safety, Playing a
matching game, and how cooking is related to math and science
Action and Expression: The students will participate in a class cooking activity. Later, the children will create
their favorite or own recipes using inspiration. The students can also interact with a cooking game to help
student follow directions.

Lesson idea implementation: The children will be in groups of four. The introduction of the lesson will start
with different utensils placed in each group. The children will explore and hypothesize the use for each
utensil. Afterwards, the students will look at a video with children using those same utensils. I will read a
book about the use of utensil on the desk. These utensils will not be hazardous to the children such as knifes.
The students will be able to use utensils such as colander, graders, measuring cups, measuring spoons etc. We
will then talk about how the utensils are related to math. On the second day, we will discuss about
ingredients. We will play a matching game to determine what ingredients will make a dish. We will watch
more videos of children cooking or making simple meals. The following day, the children will be instructed
about cooking safety, and the do’s and don’ts of cooking. We will also discuss the importance of following a
recipe and the definition of recipe.
The next day, the students will use try their cooking skills by making Jell-O. Each student will have the utensils
and tools need to make personal size Jell-O. Assistance and adaptive utensils will be given when needed. I will
use Inspiration to make a diagram of how to make Jell-O. While the Jell-O is in the fridge, the children will
watch a video of how cooking is related to science. We will explore liquid and solid materials, and the
conversion of liquids to solids. This portion will extend the children’s learning beyond just cooking.
Afterwards, the children can eat their Jell-O. For homework, I will ask the students think about how to create
a recipe or recreate their favorite food/recipe. On the last day, the students will have the chance to use
Inspiration to show how to make a dish. It can be something simple as a PB&J. The children will be given a
chance to do their presentation at the last hour of classes. I will look over the recipes and give feedback to
each student. The children’s learning will be assessed by On- The-Spot assessments, their Jell-O, and their
recipes. Overall, this lesson will take about 5 days to implement.

Reflective Practice: I believe this lesson will see the importance of math and science in everyday life. It is
also a way to see how children may like the same food or find out foods a friend cannot eat. To further extend
the lesson, we could make a classroom cookbook with recipes from the class.
