Moment 3

Problem 1:

The chain AB exerts a force of 20 lb on the door at B.

Determine the magnitude of the moment of this force
along the hinged axis x of the door.

Solution:
A(3,0,4)
B(0, 3 cos 20°, 3 sin 20°)
⇒ B(0, 2.82, 1.03)

rOA = {3 i + 4 k }ft
rOB = {2.82 j+ 1.03 k }ft
rBA = {(3 - 0) i + (0 − 2.82) j+ (4 - 1.03) k }ft
⇒ rBA = {3 i − 2.82 j+ 2.97 k }ft
rBA = (3) 2 + ( −2.82) 2 + ( 2.97 )2 = 5.08 ft

F=F
rBA
= 20
{3 i − 2.82 j+ 2.97 k}lb
rBA 5.08
⇒ F = {11.81i − 11.10 j+ 11.69 k }lb

Using the information obtained above, we can use two methods:

rOA = {3 i + 4 k }ft rOA = {3 i + 4 k }ft

rOB = {2.82 j+ 1.03 k }ft rOB = {2.82 j+ 1.03 k }ft
F = {11.81 i − 11.10 j+ 11.69 k } F = {11.81i − 11.10 j+ 11.69 k }

M x = i .(rOA × F) OR
1 0 0 M x = i .(rOB × F)
⇒ Mx = 3 0 4 1 0 0
11.81 − 11.10 11.69 ⇒ Mx = 0 2.82 1.03
11.81 − 11.10 11.69
⇒ M x = 1[0 + (11.10)( 4)] − 0 + 0
⇒ M x = 44.4 lb.ft ⇒ M x = 1[( 2.82)(11.69) + (11.10)(1.03)] − 0 + 0
⇒ M x = 44.4 lb.ft
