Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Engineering (PGDIE), the flagship programme in

NITIE has constantly evolved to tackle the complex challenges in the industry through a
thriving industry-academia interaction. Unique asset of our PGDIE students is their diverse
engineering backgrounds and work experience in various sectors viz. manufacturing,
infrastructure, FMCG, IT, banking, etc. This programme enables them in possessing a cross-

MESSAGE
DEAN (ACADEMICS)

NITIE has been striving towards the fulfilment of its mission of raising productivity
in Indian industry with optimum resource use since 1963. Flanked between two lakes, Vihar
Lake and Powai Lake, students are enriched with best learning environment in the midst of
incredibly beautiful natural surroundings.

In an ever-changing world, NITIE instils a sense of innovativeness in the student’s

thoughts and actions. With hands-on industry internships and exposure, students are
prepared to learn and apply the classroom knowledge. The programs are structured,
periodically reviewed and updated with futuristic and holistic outlook of economy and the
business. Our Programmes empowers students to view an organisation as a single entity
rather than a composition of fragmented functional areas. Besides focused learning of
operations, project planning, manufacturing etc, our multidimensional approach helps in
developing leadership and interpersonal skills with emphasis on teamwork, develops
expertise in scientific management principles, enhances quantitative and analytical skills
and improves ability to adapt. Our students are then ready to apply and integrate these
skills to enhance managerial effectiveness in current business and economic environment.

The success of our programmes is conspicuous from the fact that NITIE has been and
remains the favoured destination for students for driving national and multinational
endeavours. The students of NITIE are very much welcomed by public private industries and
institutions. Our Alumni have been significantly contributing in upscaling the Indian
Industry and fostering the growth of business for over four decades.

PGDMM- A Milestone in Manufacturing Endeavour

“Manufacturing Management is a techno-managerial two year full time

program recently introduced by NITIE with an endeavour to develop human capital
that will be capable of designing and re-designing the most effective manufacturing
system as per business needs to realize the world class manufacturing. Students in
this program will undergo a wide variety of courses from core manufacturing and
allied functions like finance, economics, marketing, OBHR and IT. For core
manufacturing courses student has a wide choice of electives from three streams
namely, manufacturing & design, manufacturing & operations management and integrated
manufacturing.
The blend of continuous learning through lectures, tutorials, presentations, case studies,
industry visits, In-plant summer internship, and project work helps student acquire multi-
disciplinary knowledge and confidence in solving the real life manufacturing problems. The program
structure facilitates students in developing their analytical skills and manufacturing decision making
capabilities in developing and executing the manufacturing strategy.”
Prof. Milind Akarte
Program Co-ordinator (PGDMM)

National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC) has been established by the

Govt. of India to provide sustained growth of manufacturing industries and to enhance the
competitiveness of manufacturing sector in India. To expedite its endeavour of building
India a manufacturing Hub new government has started a new national mission “Make in
India”. In line with this, NITIE offers a two year full time Post Graduate Manufacturing
Management Program that will facilitate students in developing their skills and decision
making capabilities in the manufacturing domain giving them a cutting edge in executing
the business strategy at the manufacturing function level. It would also help in exploiting
the manufacturing capability from the business competitiveness point of view. The program
aims at creating professionals equipped to meet the challenges in manufacturing
management.

Scientific approach to management of manufacturing function allows understanding

how production processes, people and skills within the business organization can be
efficiently and effectively deployed to meet the business objectives from market
competitiveness. The program has been designed to address manufacturing issues like
capacity analysis for responsiveness, facility analysis for product variety, compatibility
analysis between new product design and manufacturing set-up, facilities relocation,
vertical integration, waste reduction. This program facilitates in shaping students
proficiency in manufacturing domain through a structured and comprehensive approach.

SCOPE OF THE PROGRAMME

● The program would provide a multi disciplinary approach to facilitate students in grasping
the need of different functions like procurement, marketing and supply chain in developing
the manufacturing strategy and exploiting the manufacturing capability for achieving
business competitiveness.

● The program would give a perspective across value spectrum through factor input market,
manufacturing systems, delivery system with specialized inputs in areas like rapid
prototyping, computer integrated manufacturing, quality engineering, sustainable
manufacturing, IT value in manufacturing system, etc.

PGDPM - A Benchmark in Project Excellence

1.“The objective of the program is to train young and dynamic

graduate engineers to develop them into mature and knowledgeable
project professionals with the potential to manage projects in any field in
India or abroad with capabilities shoulder responsibilities across any
functional domain.”
2. “The focus of the program is to equip these budding project
professionals with strategic/operational tools & techniques to successfully
execute projects, programs & portfolios”.
Prof. V B Khanapuri
Program Co-ordinator (PGDPM)

The course has been developed based on NITIE’s close association with the industry
and different professional bodies in the field of Project Management. The program design
is based on foundations of industrial engineering and management with professional skill
development courses. The focus is to achieve a blend of sound theoretical knowledge with
practices in the field of project management. The program core courses build proficiency in
engineering and construction projects along with different types of projects executed across
the supply chain domain through understanding of subjects like Project finance, Project
Planning and control, Project execution, Project Procurement and contracts management.
The program helps the students to develop understanding of human resource issues in the
projects, techniques of dealing with quality, software and IT systems, etc. With the growing
demand for project professionals in industries like Steel, Oil & Gas, power, IT along with
huge opportunity in engineering, FMCG & service organizations this program provides the
perfect launch pad for budding graduate engineers. The electives offered in the program
allow engineers from different disciplines to select special engineering and management
subjects to enhance their subject expertise in tune with careers of their choice.

SCOPE OF THE PROGRAM

As per the data of Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation, India (MOSPI)
more than 60% of the projects in India are plagued by time and cost overruns. This is majorly
because of absence of project management skill sets in the project team. Therefore,
realizing the need to develop a deeper understanding of project management, NITIE has
started the most interactive and distinctive Post Graduate Diploma in Project Management
program (PGDPM). Project management provides a complementary skill set that blends well
with other management verticals. The course has graduate engineers with an attitude
seeking challenging opportunities in the dynamic business environment where management
by projects has become a way of life. The program has been conceptualized with a view to
provide students with methodologies to deal with diverse industrial challenges. Project
management post graduates will help in development, implementation and management of
large investment projects by both government & private industries and will also help in
contributing to various internal projects across different industries and sectors. It will
develop project managers who are responsible for the safe, timely and cost effective
delivery of a broad range of projects in industry. The most distinctive aspect of PGDPM
program at NITIE is the flexibility that it offers. The program will help the students
contribute towards making things better, be it the processes, products or systems. The
22
PGDPM program is for those who wish to move into project management, either in the
technical or business field, or into a new field of expertise. It is suitable for those with work
experience as well as those with little background in business or industry.

Course also includes practical application of Softwares like Primavera (High

Performance Project Management Software), MS Project (Easy Planning & Monitoring Project
Management tool) & Risk Management Software etc.
