Creative Art - Comprehensive

Course Description: In this course students will explore a wide variety of media and processes, art history, the elements of
art and the principles of design. This course is recommended for all students who are considering any further study of art at
the high school level, as it lays the foundation for all of the two and three-dimensional art classes.
Sketchbooks: Students are required to purchase a 9”x12” (minimum size) spiral bound sketchbook for this class. You will
be assigned weekly challenges to complete in your sketchbook, so please have this sketchbook in class by one week from
today. Students are encouraged to continue to use sketchbooks from prior art classes.
Evaluation: Assessment of learning will take place in a variety of ways. This year I will be using the following school-
directed category weights:
Formative Assessments: Sketchbook Assignments, Quizzes, Critiques, Matting = 35%
Summative Assessments: Large Scale Projects, Critiques = 35%
Professional and Positive Behavior Expectations: = 10%
Final Exam: Final Exam will consist of a few assignments = 20%
Late Work Policy: It is expected that all student complete assignments and project on time. Late work will be accepted
up until the unit summative assessment in which the work was assigned. For the most part, this deadline will coincide with
the completion of a project. If you have individual concerns with a deadline, please see me before the due date to make
other arrangements.
Tardy Policy: Being on time demonstrates respectful and responsible behavior. All tardy students are required to sign in
upon arriving to class. Consequences for tardiness to class:
1st Offense: Verbal warning from teacher
2nd Offense: Verbal warning and parent conversation with teacher
3rd Offense: 20 minute mandatory lunch detention with teacher
Subsequent Tardies: 20 minute mandatory detention with teacher. If a student does not report to a teacher detention, a
discipline referral will be submitted to administration.
Class Rules:
1. All technology is to be used for academic purposes only. Students may listen to music only at the discretion of the
teacher and it should not interfere with instruction and learning.
2. Do not waste or misuse any of the materials - this includes time, your most precious resource.
3. In the study of art, students may be exposed to images of nudes or other sensitive subjects. Students will not be
intentionally subjected to this type of material, but may experience it as an integral part of the curriculum. Students will be
instructed as to how to deal with this imagery appropriately.
Fire Drill Procedures:
Students are expected to move quickly and quietly out of the classroom to the front lawn. You will be expected to meet the
teacher at their assigned location for attendance and remain lined up behind the teacher during the entire fire drill. Cell
phones are not to be used in a fire drill situation.
Lockdown Procedures:
Students are expected to listen carefully and quietly to each instruction given by the teacher. Cell phones are not to be used
during a lockdown. Each student is expected to act responsibly to ensure the safety of everyone in the classroom.
