Conceptual Principles
Buildings consist of:

1. A foundation (sub-structure) that transfers the weight of the


building and all other applied loads to the ground.

2. A structural system (super-structure) that rises above grade,


supported by the sub-structure.

3. Interior finishes attached to or suspended from super-structural


elements at floors, walls, and ceilings.

4. Various electrical, mechanical, plumbing systems and any digitally-


controlled systems providing control of comfort, fire-safety,
security, communications, and so on.
