Teacher: Mrs. Lehman Unit Title: Ch.

5 Math

Grade Level: 7th Lesson Title: 5.5

Objectives (Write 2-5 objectives stating expected learner outcomes.):

Students will be able to identify parts of an equation including operation, variable and constant.

Students will be able to simplify expressions by combining like terms.

Common Core: 7.EE.1, 7.EE.2

Materials/Resources Needed:
Mini whiteboards, markers, erasers, pencils, math books

Anticipatory Set:
Students will do their daily warm-up bell ringer. Once the bell rings, we will check over the
problem and review our behavior expectations.

Input and Modeling: We will go over our vocabulary words and examples.

Constant – a term without a variable

Variable – a letter that represents an unknown quantity

The skill for the lesson is simplifying algebraic expressions. I will model the skill by
completing the first two examples from our math book (Glencoe Math Course 2, Volume 2).
While I model the problems, I will verbalize my thinking to explain how I am solving the
problems.

The next two problems will be done through a combination of my work and asking students
what step I would follow next. If students struggle with this step, I will go back to modeling.
If students show understanding, we will move on to guided practice.

Guided Practice: Students will complete the guided practice questions on p. 390 with a
partner to check for understanding. Once students are done, we will go over the questions
together. Students that do not show understanding will work with me in a small group.
Students that show understanding will move on to independent practice.

Independent Practice: Students will solve problems 1-10 on p. 391.
