OBJECTIVES: To be able to control the speed of a dc motor using Pulse width Modulation.

DC MOTOR: A DC motor is any of a class of rotary electrical machines that converts direct
current electrical energy into mechanical energy. Its working involves electromagnetic induction.
The most common types rely on the forces produced by magnetic fields. Nearly all types of DC
motors have some internal mechanism, either electromechanical or electronic, to periodically
change the direction of current flow in part of the motor.

WORKING:

A motor is an electrical machine which converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. The
principle of working of a DC motor is that "whenever a current carrying conductor is placed in a
magnetic field, it experiences a mechanical force". The direction of this force is given by Fleming's
left hand rule and it's magnitude is given by F = BIL. Where, B = magnetic flux density, I = current
and L = length of the conductor within the magnetic field.

APPLICATIONS:

DC motors were the first type widely used, since they could be powered from existing direct-
current lighting power distribution systems. A DC motor's speed can be controlled over a wide
range, using either a variable supply voltage or by changing the strength of current in its field
windings. Small DC motors are used in tools, toys, and appliances.

PROJECT:

 Speed Control mechanism of DC Motor.

 Common Application is Dimmer of Fans.
