DLP Assignment 1

1.1
Part One:
1. Mission Statement: Empowering diverse learners for global citizenship through
quality education in a safe, nurturing environment

Proficient-We have a written statement that is used periodically, mainly during

the beginning and end of a school year. It written on all meeting agendas but not
referenced in every meeting. In my opinion, the mission statement is too broad,
cannot be measured and it not data driven.

2. Vision Statement: Inspiring Northern Nash student to build prosperous and

meaningful future for themselves and their local and global communities.

Proficient-We have a written statement and similar to the mission statement is

written on meeting agendas and rarely mentioned. Again, I feel like this is a very
broad statement with no measurable aspects.

3. The school has adapted the district’s beliefs:

We Believe:
o Commitment to a clear and focused vision will guide the district to the highest
performance
o Effective teaching and leadership are essential for student achievement
o School environment impacts achievement
o An engaged community is essential
o Every student can/must succeed

Accomplished- I believe we follow district initiatives as far as focusing on effective

teaching. Our teachers are sent to district sponsored professional development.
Administration does state in meetings that all students can learn but this is in relations
to test score results. I believe we are test score driven but do not dissect the data for it to
be usable.

Part Two:

 We have a new principal who basically adopted what was already established at the school
and continued initiatives that were created to improve student achievement. However,
these initiatives only focused on improving test scores not necessarily student general
learning for the real world.
 Data is reviewed but not used to start the conversation on why
 School Improvement plan is discussed
 Discussion is had on the NC Teacher Working Conditions Survey
 Our leadership team is our school improvement team and most school decisions are made
through this team.
 We do utilize the professional learning community concept but we are working to improve

Part Three:

1. Have the staff complete a needs assessment

2. Have the leadership team to dissect the data to begin to address “why” and identify trends
3. Use information from 1 and 2 to set 2 realistic goals, maybe revamp mission and values
4. Use the PDCA cycle to implement strategies
5. Continue to meet with PLC to review progress and issues.

1.3

The NCPAPA High Performance Model identifies Strategic Leadership as the “driver” of the
seven NCSSE because you have to have someone who can guide by modeling and guide people to
change. Someone has to direct change and help provide clear direction. In addition, the leader is
responsible for recruiting and hiring staff that supports the vision, mission and belief of the school. In
addition, you need a representative to go before the community and be a bridge between the school
and the community. I will work to embody all of the competencies of a strategic leader though
professional development, reflection and collaboration. I will strive to ensure that all work is for the
benefit of students..
