2. DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

2.1 The Purpose of Analysis and Assumptions

The purpose of this calculation is to design the reinforced concrete bridge which is fuctioned as
pedestrian bridge in a city satisfying the provided requirements for its structural strength and
serviceability.

For the cast-in-place reinforced concrete structure, method of analysis in this calculation is LRFD
Method based on ACI 318M-11, and the used load combinations are according to Direktorat
Jenderal Bina Marga (1995). Calculation of seismic forces is based on SNI 1726-2012. The
prestress girder of the bridge is chosen from manufacturer's brochure (WIKA Beton) considering its
given strength capacity.

Assumptions for this calculation:

Supports of the piers are fixed.

Pier heads are free-ends, therefore girders and stairs are simply supported on pier heads.

Piers are modeled as single degree of freedom system, hence static equivalent procedure to
compute seismic forces can be applied.

2.2 Material Specification

Structural cast-in-place concrete compressive strength : fc' 32 MPa

Steel rebar tensile strength : fy 390 MPa

2.3 Design Load

2.3.1 Permanent Loads

Permanent loads consist of self-weight dead loads and superimposed dead loads (SIDL).

2.3.1.1 Self Weight Dead Loads

Self-weight dead loads consist of the weight of all construction materials of the bridge members
including girders, decks, piers, stairs, and foundation system. Stairs are assumed to have
additional dead load from architectural floor cover which is defined as 66 kg/m2 (equivalent to plain
concrete 3cm thick). The dead load from stair steps (aantrade = 30 cm, optrade = 18 cm) is
defined as 187.2 kg.m2 (equivalent to reinf. concrete 7.80 cm thick).

10
TOKYU-WIKA JOINT OPERATION Design Report of Pedestrian Bridge 2
Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit Project CP101 & CP102 (Jl. TB Simatupang)

Self-weight dead load:

Reinforced concrete cast in situ = 2400 kg/m3

Pre stressed concrete = 2500 kg/m3

Plain concrete = 2200 kg/m3

Steel Rebar = 7850 kg/m3

2.3.1.1 Superimposed Dead Loads (SIDL)

SIDL consist of all considered non-structural components that are attached on the bridge. They are
loads from utilities and initial wearing course (must be considered for future overlay).

Utility loads = 60 kg/m2

Initial wearing course (concrete 5 cm thick) = 120 kg/m2

2.3.2 Live Load

Live loads refer to the loads produced by the use of the bridge or other structure that does not
include construction or environmental loads.

As stipulated in the document of Direktorat Bina Teknik (1995),

pedestrian life load = 5 kPa = 500 kg/m2

2.3.3 Wind Load

According to the document of Direktorat Bina Teknik (1995), wind load is calculated using the
following equation,

Twn  0.0006Cw Vw  Ab  kN/m  where:

2

Cw = drag coefficient = 2.10 (due to b/d is assumed equal to 1.0)

Vw = wind speed = 30 m/s (assuming the bridge location is more than 5 km far away from coast)

Ab = the side surface area of the bridge span where the wind load works (m2) = 1 m X 1.7 m.

Hence Twn  1.93 kN/m = 196.5 kg/m .

This wind load is applied perpendicular to the direction of bridge span.

2.3.4 Seismic Load

The seismic load which is applied on pier head is calculated in the next chapter of this report
because it needs girder and pier section to be defined. A single degree of freedom model is utilized
to represent the pier. In single degree of freedom (SDOF) model using static equivalent procedure,

11
TOKYU-WIKA JOINT OPERATION Design Report of Pedestrian Bridge 2
Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit Project CP101 & CP102 (Jl. TB Simatupang)

the seismic forces depend solely on the natural frequency of the structure whose parameters are
the lumped mass and pier stiffness. The lumped mass and pier stiffness will be obtained if the
member sections have been defined or assumed.

There are two directions considered in applying seismic load, X (parallel to the bridge span) and Y
(perpendicular to the bridge span) direction. The code requires the seismic load is considered
100% in one direction, in combination with 30% in another direction.

2.4 Load Combinations

Load combinations which are used in strength analysis (to design structural members) as stated in
document of Direktorat Bina Marga (1995):

1.3DL + 2.0SIDL + 2.0LL (combination 1)

1.3DL + 2.0SIDL + 1.2WL (combination 2)

1.3DL + 2.0SIDL + 1.0Ex (combination 3)

1.3DL + 2.0SIDL + 1.0Ey (combination 4)

Where DL is dead load influence, SIDL is superimposed dead load influence, LL is pedestrian life
load influence, WL is wind load influence, Ex is seismic load influence parallel to the bridge span
(22 m), and Ey is seismic load influence perpendicular to the bridge span (22 m).

Load combination used to check service requirements and bearing capacity of the foundation,

1.0DL + 1.0SIDL +1.0LL (combination 5)

1.0DL + 1.0SIDL +1.0Ex (combination 6)

1.0DL + 1.0SIDL +1.0Ey (combination 7)

3. ANALYSIS AND DESIGN

The pedestrian bridge structural analysis and design are elaborated in several parts explained
below.

Figure 4 3D Model of PB-2

3.1 Pedestrian Stair

The designed stair is one whose span is longest i.e. 8.70 m. The finite element model of the stair
slab which has thickness of 25 cm is shown below.

The immediate deflection of the stair slab due to combination load 5 (at service condition) is limited
to L/360 as stipulated in ACI 318M-11. Hence the limit is7800⁄360 = 21.7 𝑚𝑚 . The calculated
maximum elastic deflection from the slab model is 13 mm for the thickness 25 cm and it satisfies
the requirement.

3.3 Bridge Pier

The pier is modeled as SDOF (single degree of freedom) system when considering seismic
response. Therefore it needs to define lumped mass at its free-end (pier head) and its bending
stiffness to calculate the seismic forces based on the provided response spectrum curve. The used
method to calculate seismic forces is the static equivalent procedure. The load combination 3 and
4 which include seismic load influence are considered in the pier analysis and design.

3.3.1 Pier-1

Height of the designed pier is 4.2 m and it will support two concrete stairs, maximum length of the
stairs is 8,7 m. The assumed initial size of the pier section is 80 cm by 80 cm.

The calculation of gravity loads which are applied and work on pier head in load combination 3 and

the legs shall be provided in each orthogonal direction of the section.

3.3.2 Pier-2

Height of the designed pier is 7.7 m and it will support one concrete stair and one voided slab,
maximum length of the stairs is 8,7 m and voided slab 14.9 m. The assumed initial size of the pier

high concentrated loads applied on the pier head and the shear span ratio is less than 2 which
causing tension-shear failure instead of bending failure that usually occurs on ordinary beams.

In the method, equivalent truss system for the pier head has to be defined prior to the analysis.
After that, truss element which is under tension or compression can be determined. Element that is
under tension is called tie, and element that is under compression is called strut. Each type of the
elements is designed according to the code.

There are two parts of the pier head to be designed: one which resists horizontal load Hu due
seismic influence, and another which resists vertical load Vu mostly due to gravity loads applied on
the bridge spans.
